From here, you can then begin to identify the metrics you want to measure and the methods by which you will capture your data and analyze results.

In non-profit work where your focus is on providing direct service, there are some aspects of success that are simply outside of your control, as they are in the hands of your clients. In our line of work, our goals are collaboratively set with our clients in order to ensure that the goals are addressing the needs that they perceive as the highest importance in their lives. Each goal has their best interest at the heart, and is designed to promote their self-efficacy with us and with other providers.

In our line of work, we collect both quantitative and qualitative data. While quantitative data is the easiest to collect, just by merit of tracking the services each client receives, we also take into consideration the impact that these services have on the lives of our clients. These qualitative metrics often involve narrative descriptions of the impact that our residents and clients feel when they have been the recipient of these services.

When program teams come together to identify and share existing data sources for learning and reflection, it provides a great opportunity to revisit program goals and nonprofit mission. From this place, those on the front lines may also acknowledge lesser heard from voices and perspectives, that will further contextualize and inform the evaluation findings. The more evaluation and learning is integrated into ongoing program operations, and less one-off, the less burdensome data collection will be on staff and other stakeholders. We collect a large sum of our data through our weekly encounters with our clients and residents. This data can look like goals met, steps taken towards progress and independence, or a short description of what challenges and barriers our clients are identifying as the stumbling blocks to their success. These data points are specific to each case, but all reflect the same principles of the overarching topics we aim to address with each one as they pursue independence.

As we are still developing our program as a young nonprofit, we find ourselves frequently comparing back to our earlier days and seeing all the things that we have gotten "wrong" along the way. We also take a lot of the feedback from those receiving our services in order to know how to serve them best. Some of the main themes that ring consistent are 1) the impact of grace in the lives of those in need of our services, 2) the importance of structure to create felt-safety and consistency in our program, and 3) to never think that because we got it right for one person, that the same system will work for the next.

As we have developed our program, our key themes that we address have become increasingly apparent. These themes shape our reporting and the data points that highlight the impact of the work that we do on a daily basis. Each report allows us to take a step back as the staff and see the bigger picture of the steps our residents and clients are taking towards independence and success, and help us to keep that broad perspective rather than being stuck in the tunnel-vision of the daily work.
