To me, success in one career is very much the same as success in another; what matters is perspective. There is success as seen by others, usually based on standard measures such as number of publications, position, salary, peer recognition etc. And then there is the personal perspective: have I achieved what I wanted? I know scientists who never wanted to climb the greasy pole of academic promotion, preferring to work away in the laboratory; they viewed this as a privilege and a success. Furthermore I viewed them as successful because they were happy. But of course it is not always the case that someone we view as successful feels that way about him- or herself, so resist making assumptions about success based on "standard measures".

With biotech companies typically clustered in areas with a high cost of living people can sometimes find themselves earning relatively large wages, but "struggling" with costs. If you can work for a company that allows you to live in an area with a lower cost of living and go occasionally to the office then you can take advantage of location arbitrage! This will help achieve financial stability.
