Here's how you can master vocal variety in public speaking.

Practice, practice, practice. This is the best way to master vocal variety in my opinion. Record yourself. For me it is hard to do this by only speaking out loud. Record yourself with different types of sentences expressing different modes and tonality. Then play it back. Only by listening and playing back (for me at least) is how you can better change your tonality, volume and expression.

Mastering vocal variety involves modulating pitch with respect to your pace, volume levels & your tone to enhance your message's impact. Change pitch to emphasise key points, keeping it higher when creating excitement & lower when saying something serious. Vary your pace to hold interest-slow down when giving an important statement & speed up for something more casual. Your volume also should change- softer levels to draw in the audience & louder to show urgency. Finally, bring in emotion through a change in tone. A motivational line needs to reflect that motivation in your voice so as to motivate your audience. On the other hand building empathy requires an empathetic tone. Reading aloud is a great exercise for articulation & intonation.

First step is to understand your vocal range. Download the Voice Pitch Analyzer app (or another similar) and record yourself and see how high and low you go normally. Second, understand the extraordinary power of vocal variety to convey your ideas. Like music, speech should have prosody, which means intonation and rhythm.

One speaking ability great public speakers master early on is the ability to captivating and connect with their audience by amplifying or lowering their voice. If they want the rapt attention of their audience - they tend to speaking fast and loudly. If they want to make the audience hang unto their every word, they lower their voice and speak slowly. This works all the time. Fascinating right?

I once watched in a YouTube video which stated that we replace our filler words (ums, ahs etc) with a strategic pause. That was nothing short of brilliant! A strategic pause sends a signal to your audience that you are calm, confident and in complete control of your thoughts and speech. Making a pause speech is quite hard to pull off but it with time and constant practice, you'll get the hang of it. Best of luck!
