Here's how you can master Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Transportation Planning.

Pour maitriser les systèmes d'informations géographiques, il faut d'abord maitriser les bases. Le format shapefile et ses composants , les systèmes de projections, la sémiologie graphique et les fonctionnalités de l'analyse spatiale sont les premiers bagages à avoir avec soi pour le voyage dans le monde des SIG.

Je ne fais pas de programmation informatique. Mes missions sont principalement la correction, création ou suppression d’objets dans SIG via soit les relevés géomètres (récolements en ? classe A ?), soit par les techniciens de secteur qui nous informent de petits travaux, ou un repositionnement des réseaux (réseaux saisis avec la table de digitalisation (vers 1997) en ? classe C ? et que nous repositionnons en ? classe B ?). Nous utilisons principalement les outils d’ortho-photos, plans topologiques, et même G-Map. Dernièrement, nous avons un outil de mobilité qui nous aide beaucoup si nous avons les bonnes informations.

Les qualités essentielles pour ce métier sont : savoir s’orienter sur une carte ou un plan, être rigoureux, minutieux, patient et diplomate. Avoir la maitrise approfondie de logiciels de capture et modifications d’images, ainsi que le SIG. Pour ma part, j’ai commencé mon métier il y a moins de 25 ans (aucuns dipl?mes de géomatique n’existaient) sous les langages Apic, puis ESRI et nous basculons bient?t sous QGis. Il faut donc être curieux et ne pas avoir peur des changements liés aux évolutions informatique.

Data management is essential when it comes to a GIS! Before a project can begin, one has to know what type of data is going to be used (raster, vector, numerical, string, range, etc.) and what analytics will be preformed on that data. Raw data is dirty! It has to be cleaned up, preprocessed, analyzed, and post processed before it can be used to generate information. Data Naming Conventions are just as important. These two key items are fundamental. If the data are haphazardly designed, structured, and organized, a properly functioning and reliable GIS will never see fruition. Unfortunately, most GIS analysts are told by their supervisors what they want as an end product, with no understanding of what is done to get the final product.

Learning to capitalize on the public data resources available for transportation planning is key. Taking time to acquaint oneself with the various agencies involved, what type of data they produce, and how often it is updated, enables quick, accurate, and efficient analysis of transportation patterns and needs.

En análisis espacial de transportes destacaría los siguientes aspectos: 1: Dominar análisis de redes (algoritmos de Dijkstra, de flujo máximo o de Floyd-Warshall). 2: Análisis SQL y big data. 3: Análisis de ruido, para modelado de propagación, así como estudio de medidas de mitigación. 4: Análisis de segmentación dinámica: Clasificación y segmentación de tramos de carreteras según características dinámicas como el flujo de tráfico u otras condiciones del tramo virtual. Uso de algoritmos de aprendizaje automático para segmentar y analizar patrones en los datos de tráfico, con implementación de sistemas de gestión del tráfico en tiempo real basados en segmentación dinámica.

Spatial visualization is arguably one of the most fundamental and crucial aspects of a GIS. Numbers, graphs, or charts with confusing lines are of very little use when it comes to making critical decisions and/or predictions. Only by evaluating and analyzing data from multiple sources can one determine what MIGHT be important. Once these datasets are compiled into a spatial relational model and merged into a 2D, 3D, and 4D spatially relevant visualization, data points that might have appeared trivial at best in the beginning, could turn out to be the most relevant information generated during project development. Always remember that everything is just data until it can be visualized in context with other data to create information.

As a Well-site Geologic Consultant, critical thinking, a strong synthesis of interdisciplinary knowledge, and good communication skills keep me employed. I usually log cuttings and gas (C1-C4), while geosteering 28,000 ft wells at 450 ft/hr. Communication with the Operations Geologist, Directional Drillers, and Company Men is challenging at the best of times, but we are all there to do the same thing; drill a successful well. Through critical thinking, applying everything you’ve learned (in school and on the job), and communicating clearly what you’re seeing in samples, petrophysics, and drilling parameters as things develop, the entire operation runs smoothly. There are times when thing goes south, but just remember we are all human.
