Goals are important but should come in 2nd place to Player Fantasy. You can create goal of how you want your game to operate, but without determining the Player Fantasy first, you'll make a generic game that doesn't grip the player. Please take everything with a grain of salt. One of the biggest things to keep in mind is avoiding powercreep. When releasing newer content, reconsider if it will utterly dwarf existing content, or work synergistically and create an enjoyable experience for all players. Additionally, don't try to overcomplicate something as it could become a balancing nightmare. It's much easier to adjust damage numbers on an ability with one effect, then to adjust every single ratio on a spell that has multiple effects (DoT, CC, etc.). Weight how much monetary return is expected by the team, deadline for version one, and how much of the artistic vision should be prioritized. These tend to be a common source of conflict within teams. Set the right expectations as soon as possible.

Keep your time and money safe. It's important not to invest too much in something that doesn't hold value. While this may seem obvious, it's easy to get tunnel vision and go overboard.

Feedback will provide you bugs and ideas that you never think about before. At every step of its creation, your game must be reviewed by extern actors. They can be professionals or be part of your aimed audience (they should have the best advice but you also need to take in condiseration that they may don't have experience in this job)
