Through my experience, I've seen people make two mistakes when they attempt to learn the basics in AI/ML; they either focus too much on the code and leave out mathematical fundamentals altogether, or they put too much focus on the math with little to no attention to the code. In my opinion, learning the basics requires a balance between the two. Understanding of the basics of probability and statistics is required while knowing how to do the statistics using numpy,scipy, or pandas. Understanding the mathematical formulation of linear regression (for example) is required while knowing to work with scikit-learn to effectively apply it. Such a step-by-step balanced technique is very effective in shaping the experience of an R&D engineer.

Before diving into any technology, it's crucial to grasp the basic concepts and fundamentals. A great way to do this is by utilizing various online resources. Depending on your learning style, one might prefer watching videos, reading articles, or going through books. As a manager in the world of artificial intelligence and machine learning, it's crucial to stay ahead of the game and master the necessary skills. First, embrace change and encourage your team to do the same. AI and ML are evolving at breakneck speed. Secondly, invest time and resources in training and education programs. A well-trained team is a successful team. As leaders, we don’t need to become data scientists, but we must understand the principles, capabilities, and limitations of these technologies. This foundational knowledge allows us to ask the right questions and make informed decisions.

Start with dedication and passion. Start some good courses on Coursera, find some interesting open lectures on YouTube from Stanford, MIT or CMU. Once you start, be consistent and rest the journey itself will guide you to destination. Learning is an art, it has no boundaries or roadways. It is an endless ocean that you sail for the rest of your life.

Another effective approach is to join coding clubs, and teams, or participate in hackathons, even if you're not yet proficient in AI. Tagging along with experienced practitioners allows you to learn and understand the underlying operations of AI through collaboration and observation.

This is particularly the case with AI and machine learning, where we need more practical than theoretical knowledge. By taking on projects, you familiarize yourself with the ecosystem and the technology in the area. Without taking on a project, you will never know where you are good and where you are bad.

For any AI application, understanding the data is the "key factor" to its successful execution. Thorough data exploration, preprocessing, and feature engineering are essential steps in this process. By analyzing and visualizing the dataset, one can identify its structure, patterns, and anomalies. Creating new features or modifying existing ones enhances the model's performance while selecting the most relevant features improves efficiency and accuracy. The more one understands the finer nuances of the data, the less effort is needed on algorithm selection and hyperparameter tuning. This foundational work leads to more accurate and reliable AI models, leading to an easier development process and ensuring better outcomes.

Data is the cornerstone of ML. Mastering the collection, cleaning, and manipulation of large datasets is essential. Begin with open-source datasets to practice extracting meaningful insights from raw data. Familiarize yourself with data processing tools and concepts like data wrangling, which transforms and maps raw data into usable formats. This skill is crucial for preparing data for effective ML model training. Personally, diving into diverse datasets helped me understand the nuances of data quality and its impact on model performance.

More of our work with machine learning, particularly LLM, involves model training. Data is supplied into these models from multiple sources. Therefore, additional data is required in order to get a better result.

Exploring ML algorithms is crucial for problem-solving in AI.
