Here's how you can manage client feedback and revisions as a freelance designer.

After the "clarity call" it is VITAL to create an outline that reflects the conversation as well as the task at hand. Share that with your new partner and let them review prior to launching the campaign. I have been at this for over 2 decades, every project starts with a project outline. The goal is "transparency" right out of the gate. They will respect you very much for this. *plus toy will stand out in an ocean of "noise" by doing so.

I like doing this by breaking down and cost estimate or scope of work into the logical steps or phases that I would take a project through. Once you have that there is an expectation from the client what's happening first, and what you need from them. This helps avoid any time delays and helps you set the right expectations from the start.

It's crucial to be transparent about timelines, payment plans, work scope, and deliverables before the project starts. When planning on how to receive feedback, be sure to make it clear how many rounds of feedback/revisions are included in the pricing and the way in which the feedback is provided. I find it's best to have the feedback in email format or writing so it is easiest to refer back to. Even if you have feedback during a call, I'd say it's a good idea to take note of the feedback and relay that back to the client to confirm what will be worked on. The more solid and transparent the process, the less change there is for things to go unexpected.

Feedback is vital just as the air that we breathe. Remember your "posture" during any project..your partner (client) is paying you to do this work--along with that, they get some say as to how it will all look. It's a collaboration. Yes, you are the professional in the equation---but by reading them in and giving them a voice, they're passion will also elevate. Play the "long game"--when they feel "heard" and "seen" they will be back for more projects.

Remember to stay open minded and leave your ego at the door, it's happened to me countless times where I remove my feelings from a situation, receive feedback and look at it objectively to produce a better result.

Changes and new ideas happen frequently during a design campaign and it's important to look at that as an opportunity and not an obstacle! The opportunity to exceed the initial concept, the opportunity to have a clearer picture. Articulate that to your partner (client) during onboarding and sell them on the idea that design lives and breathes and that "new ideas" along the way may inspire new directions.

In jewelry design, every detail counts—communication included. The most important thing I keep in mind is that my client often is not familiar with issues that might be obvious to me as an expert. When discussing revisions, I detail exactly what adjustments are possible and how they'll impact the final piece and our timeline. If my client's request isn't feasible, I clearly explain why and propose creative alternatives. This precision ensures that each piece not only meets but exceeds expectations, fostering a strong, collaborative relationship.

Organizing revisions or even meeting notes about revisions can be as simple as making a notation of the date on a hand drawn sketch for example. Often, this revision information which is done offline takes the most effort for me to organize because it is not automatically timestamped.

Compensation is established during the onboarding process. There is NO excuse not to establish a budget in the beginning. Many artists' fail at this and quite frankly that is their fault during the onset because it sets a stage of unprofessionalism right from the beginning. A price range nailed down lets the "left hand know what the right hand is doing." With years of experience and the portfolio you've built comes the rate that you charge. We start out with low hanging fruit---as we build our careers--we build out ladder to climb higher in the tree for those larger projects.

Compensation for our labor is an important aspect of cooperation. If a project requires additional effort, we are willing to discuss a revision of the fee, transparently explaining the reasons. Our goal is to maintain mutual understanding and trust, paying attention to the value of your time and our expertise. Fairness and respect for our professional services are important principles we adhere to in our work.

Any project should start with a clear understanding of what will be done, how long it will take and how you move through the difference phases. If you only allow a specific number of revisions for a fixed price, outline that clearly in the project's scope to help set the expectations early. I've also found that allowing a client to go over a hard revisions deadline can be advantageous when you're close to the final version, just keep things in check.
