To quote Todd Howard: "Great games are played, not made." The safe and easy thing to do is to aim for 'perfection' before gathering feedback. That's the wrong approach. You should gather feedback as soon as possible. Even rough sketches would do if you are clear in communicating your design goals. That early feedback is crucial to find problems in your design while giving you enough time to correct course. And as soon you have something ready, make sure to playtest it soon. When you're working on low-level stuff (for example, writing a feature spec), it's easier to forget the big picture and the overall goals of the game. To avoid this, make sure that every feature spec have goals at the top of document. These goals must be linked to your game pillars, which in turn must be in tune with the game vision. Having a printout of the game vision and pillars won't hurt either as a constant reminder of where you should aim at with every work you complete, either it's a whole system, or an individual asset.

Il est alors temps de prendre du recul et revenir aux essentiels : quelle est l'expérience joueur ? correspond-elle à notre objectif de départ ? D'autres mécanismes de jeux nous permettraient-ils d'atteindre cet objectif ? Sans oublier de toujours se reposer la question autrement : quand on est face à un problème, il est toujours bon de repartir de la question et de la poser autrement. C'est ainsi que de nouvelles idées jaillissent !

I always look at game design the same way a screenplay writer starts a screenplay. Who is the hero? What problem are they trying to solve? What does the resolution look like? Sounds silly, but you'd be surprised how when you dig into that it leads to problem solving. If you know your hero's obstacles, you'll think of how the player will solve them. Game design is nothing but problem solving. if you are doing a puzzle game, what is a puzzle? A problem for the player to solve. Your job as game designer is to make sure that whatever challenge give to the player is not challenging to the point of frustrating. You want balance. You also want to take a complicated idea and simplify it so that the player can immediately understand it.
