Peer Engagement ist pretty important. In my opionon many engineers stuck so deep in their work, that they don't have time for peer engagement. More often they have to do peer engagement every single day but in their own office, business bubble. So nobody outside can access their knowledge and experiences. Peer engagement not only means that you take part in associations for branches, standarization, university conferences. It also means that you are willing and are capable to share your knowledge and also learn from your colleagues or engineering/scientific articles and publications. LinkedIn is a perfect platform to connect to people who are masters on specific civil engineering disciplines giving you the ability to share knowledge.

As an experienced civil engineer, I find that actively engaging with peers is invaluable. Collaborating on projects allows us to exchange ideas and tackle challenges together. Regularly participating in discussions, whether online or in person, fosters a sense of community and encourages diverse perspectives. By sharing experiences and best practices, we not only enhance our skills but also build a supportive network that can provide assistance and opportunities throughout our careers.

In my carreer experience I had many mentors, some only tried to be mentors. They were all masters in their specific field but I often missed that personal connection and also time was often short. A mentorship is great, If it wents well you will have contact to your mentors for a log time and they will connect you to other people in your field and you gain very good insights and skills. In any case you should not expect to much from a random or job related relationship. Normally people are pushing forward their own priorities not yours - sometime you are just a tool for someone elses success. A good mentorship is hard to find but if you have luck it works in both ways - everyone learns and grows on this jurney - I wish it for everyone.

industry events are good to learn and hear the big players in your specific civil engineering field. Mistakes I often made in the past are... .. not having a list when for my domain interresting event take part and early planning my vacations to visit the events ... not connecting to speakers and make smalltalk because I was too shy and not self confident ... not send papers to papercalls .. not have my LinkedIn Profile-QR code on my phone or cards to connect fast to interresting people. ... not buying the conference proceedings literature (sometimes a few years later you stumble upon that specific topic - no connection to the specialist and you don't know who was the specialist because you do not have the conference proceedings)
