I always remind myself that I just need to edit as simple as possible. This way I cover the foundation before editing a video completely. Next once I am strong with the base layer, I then add appropriate effects or overlays that act cherry on the top. Remember editing is just 30 percent of the video. The rest of it is the key Story and the hero of the video.

Study your preferred platform. Learn it like the back of your hand. All of them have shortcuts and the ability to set up personalized keyboard inputs. Use that to create ways to work so that the platform preforms like an instrument. Being able to work at the speed of thought or as close to it as possible, will buy you time to re-assess, search for different avenue in you story, spot mistakes in the story, try new things etc.

Specializing doesn't have to always mean what you are able to create but also your characteristics. An advanced video editor with high special effects and 3D Modeling knowledge could lack a good work ethic and make them unattractive to employers. Find what makes you the absolute best in this field because video editing positions are varied. If you can't stand modeling, then don't do it. Find what makes you the best and perform.

Developing a solid story is the best way to stand out from others in your industry. The big question is, what story are you going to tell. For me, I tell stories best through B-Roll cuts and pacing. I am still learning how to be a good actor, so being able to cut in with B-Roll and other visuals has helped me to tell the story I want to tell, despite my poor acting.

Ask yourself questions like: What if I told this story from a different characters perspective? What if I told it backwards? What happens if I try and take all the dialog out? And so on and so on. New things will reveal themselves in the material and take your story to another level.

I cannot tell you enough how important Networking is within this field. Once you are able to get your very first position as a video editor, take that connection to your employer and run with it. When I got my very first job with a Youtuber, my performance as a video editor grabbed the attention of his other Youtuber friends and before you know it, I had 4 Video Editing jobs AT ONCE. Networking in this field works like a domino effect. Grabbing your first position is the hardest but everything comes rolling once you do (as long as you aren't crap at your job) Now how can you grab attention of your first employer? Showcase some of your personal work or give them video they could possibly use for free as an investment to a hire.

Networking within the industry can provide opportunities for mentorship and collaboration that can lead to career advancement. Attend industry events, join online forums, and connect with other video professionals. Sharing experiences and insights can open doors to new opportunities and promotions, as relationships in the business can be just as important as the skills you wield. From my experience in video editing, I've found that networking is invaluable. By attending industry events and engaging in online communities, I've not only honed my skills but also forged connections that have led to exciting projects and career growth. Relationships can often be the catalyst for new opportunities, sometimes even more so than technical prowess.

One way to guarantee a long career is to be known for staying under budget. The easiest way to do this is to adopt techniques that don’t require the latest, greatest technology or equipment. Do more with less. One way to learn this is to study the techniques used by films of the 1920s and ‘30s. Don’t worry about the stories being told in the films. Concentrate on the limitations endured by the filmmakers. Study carefully and you will be able to discover the “tricks” they used, and you will not only make your productions better, you will be able to bring them in without breaking the bank.

Think about how you can add value beyond just technical skills. This could be through mentoring junior editors, leading projects, or introducing new workflows to your team. Being proactive and taking on leadership roles can demonstrate your readiness for promotion and set you apart from your peers.

Dont just look at great masterpieces for inspiration. Often one can feel demoralised by it as you will often think "I will never be as good as that". Instead look at bad movies and videos. Not to laugh at them, but to see how creativity is found in everything. To recognise and admire the creative force that goes into everything, to look for grains of greatness in the worst of productions, and also to comfortable think "At least I can do better than that."
