Reflection is the key to success. The more we reflect on our experience, the more we learn from it. Failure is inevitable and can be our best learning partner. When I was at the beginning of my career, I had a very negative teaching observation (external) and I almost gave up teaching. However, I realised it was a learning experience - I did not fail, I just did not adapt my teaching to the audience and did not planned the observed session in a way to make it appealing to the students.

My first couple of teaching experiences did not go so well and when I took a step back and thought about it, I realised that the strategies I was using in class were not conducive to the learning goals or outcomes I was trying to achieve. Often teachers fall into a rut, given the quantum of work which needs completing and we fall into monotonous teaching patterns. If a class does not meet the desired objective, it’s often because teaching patterns haven’t been adequately adjusted. One thing I would frequently do is keep a weekly track of the classroom methods I was using and align them with the learning goals.

I disagree with the idea of a ‘failed teaching experience’. We are often very narrow and shallow in defining the impact of our words, our lessons and our teaching. The notion of a ‘passed’/‘failed’ lesson reflects a short-term view of learning as knowledge transfer. The reflection and response to a lesson that does not go as we intended *can* be more valuable than the session that is “delivered” as intended. We should plan for reflection and response, and anticipate the likelihood of things deviating from our intention. In this way, “failed learning experience” is not a blindsiding interruption of error, but is an already-anticipated swerve in the road.

Self- Motivation: Self-motivation is the key to our progress. When you feel like quitting something, take note that this is the internal motivation that motivates us to perform. Self-assessment and positive feedback are necessary for sure. Perform a thorough examination of your journey, discovering what went wrong and what went right, and then establish your plan and tone. Believe me, it works. Our mindset determines how we perceive failure. If we refuse to accept it, we begin to view it as a learning opportunity. Don't give up, remember that every dark cloud has a silver lining and every dark night has a bright morning. Find your silver lining and give your all, then rise again with more strength and determination.

Sometimes, a teaching career may end up not being a long-term calling, and life may redirect you to a different path. However, it does not mean that you lose the capability or talent to teach. Like diamonds, we first have to go through life's tempering and pressuring process -- either through gaining substantial experience or honing teaching methods, then the comeback process begins in the right time. Allow yourself time to process your experiences and emotions, accept them and use them as valuable lessons. Who knows, the academic world may come calling again at the right time for you!
