Tech expertise is not limited to data and information. In my current team, the head analyst who is a trained data analyst took MOOCS on our line of work and trained himself on our industry. Our other data analyst is promoted from our teams and self trained on some of the data anlaysis tools. In the past, I worked with data analysts who also had expertise in the field. Expertise in their task is one thing but if they are to understand what they are analysing data for, they need to train in the work the organisation does, also be directly involved in how the data is collected.

I try to involve the data staff in other "value adding" tasks. It's usually extra work and it obviously impacts their performance in same way. But it does give them venues to improve. For instance, on communication. I invole them directly in communication products, what data or info to show and how to show it. Direct involvment with partners: direct contacts with other data people in their industry for data sharing, methods, objectives, approaches etc.
