The least one can do is, coach team members on the job, without insulting them or questioning their abilities. For engineers, first comes subject knowledge and technical stuff needs guidance. Once the engineer is knowledgable, confident and can think on their own feet, that by itself is motivation!

Just like in a sports team, once the potential of a team member is identified, the project leader should utilize the team jellying matrix and assign the team member on a task of their full potential. The project leader should be weary of those personal and individual goals/ character that work againts the team objective and pin pointly eliminate them. This should be done on a FFFRT manner. Firm, Fairly, Frankly Realistically and timely.

Encourage all team members to suggest what additional responsibilities they would like have. Tell them to show their strengths by writing technical papers and presenting their papers in a conference. Recognize their contribution in the field to the project team. Financial awards will promote greater participation and over all satisfaction in the company.

Continuous improvement requires emphasis on training and attending technical conference. Encourage all team members to identify what additional courses and trainings they need in their field to improve on. Spend some money on courses and technical conferences team members require to improve their skills.As a team leader you should know strengths and weaknesses of your team members. Arrange monthly seminars inviting experts to conduct training in those fields.
