1 Choose Hardware

Selecting the right hardware is critical when integrating IoT into your electrical designs. Focus on microcontrollers that can handle the processing requirements of your project while maintaining low power consumption. Additionally, choose sensors that are appropriate for the data you intend to collect, whether it's temperature, motion, or something else. Connectivity modules like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Zigbee must be compatible with your intended network infrastructure. Remember to consider the physical environment where your design will operate , as this can affect both hardware selection and placement.

In telcos and data centers, batteries are a must have hardware to incorporate in your electrical designs. Batteries such as Li-ion and VRLA's are used as a reliable source of backup power in case of failure. But which is better of the two? The benefits of Li-ion batteries far outweigh those of VRLA if you ask me. For one, LIB's have longer service life than VRLA's. It also requires a smaller footprint compared to VRLA's without compromising energy density. Additionally, LIB's have BMS that monitors the state of the batteries which makes it very handy when it comes to maintenance. Of course, LIB's require higher CAPEX upfront compared to VRLA's. But seeing the benefits above, give me LIB's anytime.

I want to add two important points on hardware selection for IoT: 1. The designed product should have an acceptable price; consider the cost and availability of the SoC you are going to use. 2. While designing your own antenna might seem more professional, it complicates the certification process, such as obtaining CE marks. For small to moderate production quantities, it’s better to use modules with onboard antennas.

Security is always the last thing on people's minds when they start an IoT project. It’s crazy! We need to change that. Right from the start, when we’re figuring out what the project needs, we should be thinking about how to keep it safe. It’s important to talk about security with the whole team, including the developers and the clients. The worst part is when the tech lead starts building without thinking about security first. It’s like trying to put a band-aid on a gunshot wound later. We need to flip the script and make security the top priority from the get-go.
