In general, choosing a new career path is a process with plenty of zigzags along the way. At the same time, every move we make, in some way, informs our direction. The process of finding a job requires an experimental resilient mindset as well as a strong sense of self. This is definitely a self-discovery journey. We learn something valuable about our next professional chapter from every article we read, every company we research, every networking meeting we attend, every application we send, every interview we take part in, and every feedback we receive along the way. So, how can we assess our career change/job search performance? (below)

During a job search, integrate goal setting into performance evaluation by: Self-assessing strengths, weaknesses, and career aims. Establishing SMART goals aligned with job roles and aspirations. Creating action plans with timelines and resources for goal achievement. Tracking progress, seeking feedback, and adapting strategies accordingly. Documenting achievements, challenges, and lessons learned for future reference. Staying motivated, flexible, and focused on continuous improvement. Reflecting on experiences to enhance performance and achieve career objectives

Don't just be busy, be strategic. Tracking applications, networking events, and responses holds you accountable and reveals what's working. Analyze this data to refine your approach and maximize results. It's about focused effort, not just filling the days.

1. Job searches have their unique rhythms. Occasionally, we'll get three interview invitations in a week or a headhunter will contact us, and our networking contacts will be ready to meet, after which two weeks will pass without any action. Career changes typically follow this pattern. So, we need to build downtime into our expectations and use it to strengthen our work, not demotivate us. The time can be used for further research, contacting our network, fine-tuning our application, seeing a counselor, or talking to a former colleague.

It's important to track your progress regularly, such as keeping a log of applications, networking events, and responses. This helps you stay accountable, provides evidence of your efforts, and allows for informed adjustments to your job search strategy, ensuring productivity.

Coming from a gaming background, I like to "gamify" the grind of some tasks (like job hunting). I set a boss-tier job search goal (think "Land a [Target Job Title] by [Timeframe]". Then I break it into side quests (e.g., networking, applications, interviews) and assign points for completion. I even give them a little art and color schemes borrowed from my current favorite games. When I hit meaningful milestones my "game" unlocks personal rewards like a Netflix binge or whatever.

2.Our small wins deserve recognition. It often takes many small wins to yield the big win we're seeking to accomplish. Let's say, initially, we did not receive any interview invitations, but after polishing up our resume or targeting a different industry, we are now being interviewed by several companies. Even if we were rejected after the first round, but are now making it to later interviews, that's progress, and worth celebrating. Our connections' response rate was low, but we learned how to follow up properly, etc. So, let's fill a section in our document of achievements that shows what we’ve accomplished since the beginning of our search.

Track Your Progress: Land the Perfect Job Faster Don't job search blindfolded! Track your progress to see what works. Regularly evaluate your goals, celebrate wins, and learn from misses. Secured interviews but no offers? Refine your skills or adjust your target positions. This data-driven approach helps you land the right job, faster.

If sending out resumes isn't getting responses, try attending industry events to make in-person connections. If your networking efforts haven't been fruitful, consider revamping your online presence with a professional portfolio website. If you're struggling to secure interviews, volunteer for relevant projects or internships to gain practical experience and expand your network. If your applications are getting overlooked, consider seeking guidance from a career coach or mentor to polish your application materials. Following my recent performance evaluation, I decided to seek feedback from a former colleague who had transitioned into a similar role. I shared my resume and discussed interview techniques with them. Their insights were enlightening and helped me identify areas for improvement in my presentation and communication. Incorporating their feedback, I refined my goals and strategies, which led to an enhanced job search performance and promising career opportunities.

As a part of an individual's job search journey, don't forget the fallen apples that you passed by from your current and past jobs. It has been proven that employees leave their managers and not the corporation they work in. Reflect on the reasons why you felt the drive to look for new opportunities and what changes you would look for in your new environment. I am currently using AI to do a sentiment analysis of some of my past (self) appraisals to see if I had sent signals to my supervisors on my desire to change roles or seek new adventure and the correlation between that and my actual change in role / job. As managers do we also need to listen to retain employees!

Research Goals: Before interviews, study the company's mission and strategic goals. Identify areas where your skills can contribute. Craft SMART Goals: Prepare specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals you'd achieve in the first 30, 60, or 90 days. Showcase initiative and strategic thinking. Highlight Alignment: During interviews, connect your goals to the company's goals. Demonstrate how your skills and ambition directly contribute to their success. By showcasing goal-setting abilities and strategic alignment, you'll impress employers and position yourself as a valuable asset who can hit the ground running.
