Empathy, in my point of view, is the worst trait you can have as a coach. Compassion, yes, that's a necessity, but empathy isn't... Hear me out. Empathy is the ability to SHARE the thoughts and feelings of your client. But the last thing a client needs at that moment is someone joining into that. So instead, use compassion. Compassion is the ability to hold the space so your client can express themselves fully. Compassion makes you understand the feelings and issues, but keeps your emotions and thoughts neutral. The client needs you to help them find the way out; to see what they cannot see. Being in the same state as your client doesn't help them at all.
