I'm going to combine most of these into one answer, and it's simple. Most people have never taken time out of their lives to identify their Personal Core Values. If someone doesn't know what matters most to them, how are they going to have true passionate drive, how teamwork functions in their lives, have any ethical integrity, or any long-term commitment? Without understanding what you value most, you may be great at philanthropy, but you won't truly understand what it means to you. Make sure you know why others (and you) are doing something so important. Discuss why philanthropy matters, and what the expectations from it are (warm fuzzy feelings are often enough of a reason).

That they should have expertise in the said domain is a given. Some do as much as add to the strength of the organization by joining, identifying with the cause and standing with the team. And that's great! What would be more desirable is over and above that, a demonstration of their commitment (long or short term) and desire to make a difference by active and meaningful engagement.

When I'm involved in volunteer and board recruitment, I always use a skills matrix to guide the process. Connection to the cause and passion are key elements I look at, and yes, I give everything a ranking. It’s essential, right? You really want to be sure that when it’s a gorgeous warm summer evening and there’s a board or volunteer meeting, whether it's over Zoom or in person, your team members are the kind who will show up! That deep connection to the cause can really speed up or slow down how well we achieve our charitable mission. However, it's just as important to take a balanced look at what skills each person brings and how committed they are. Plus, I always look for an X factor.

While skills are important, it is often overrated. For skills can easily be taught and learned within days and months. Heart cannot be converted over days or months unless through Divine Power. To smash a heart of stone into flesh is the skill most treasured when building my team. Hardware can be trained and replaced. Heart-ware cannot be data-mined and replaced. It requires keen observations, sensing, feeling with the person. These cannot be taught and are experienced.

Therefore it is necessary to consider how team members function individually and what roles they choose to take on when accomplishing tasks as a team. By understanding these dynamics, team synergy can be increased and by extension, greater success will be achieved.

Team synergy can only be fostered with a clear strategy and tactics that fit each team member's strongest sets of skills. When team members feel comfortable in their roles, the individual's talent will take over. When the whole team trusts plan, their roles on the team and their teammates, buy in is created. Buy in leads to synergy.

Part of integrity connected to philanthropy is a commitment to aligning the values of the donor with the impact of the project. I’ve seen trust with a donor grow when the fundraiser is open and honest and acknowledges “this may not be the best project for you to invest in”. That’s integrity

I have found there are many paths individuals can be successful and contribute positively to your team and it is not necessarily formulaic. Some are driven by simple competiveness, some by passion for the cause, and some by bring an analytical perspective thar takes a team to the next level. Embrace all and find a way to recognize and reward their unique abilities.

A philanthropic team has been entrusted to with resources to be used for the betterment of people. These resources must be used ethically and with transparency at all times. All members must be accountable for the resources inwhich the donors have entrusted to this team, with no exception. This team has been assembled to help others. This is the standard.

While I agree with this sentiment in theory, the reality is that the average tenure of a fundraiser is 18 months. This is in part due to unrealistic expectations from leadership on the amount of time it takes to build a relationship and ramp up, low pay, and the lack of clear opportunities to grow in the job - a career ladder. If you only look for someone with longevity, you miss the risk takers, and those who for financial reasons have had to make the jump in order to advance in their career.

More than commitment is a conviction to change — to be the change agent. A conviction is a deep motivation, mission with a vision that changes the cause from the present having recognised and identified the reality. A conviction runs deep and needs no incentives to motivate the person. The person is motivated and driven from within.

These terms are debatable long-term in today’s culture could mean 3 to 6 months. I found that people who are committed to the process and senior project through a very valuable and today’s culture 5 to 10 year commitment is not feasible.

Cultural fit is one thing, mission fit is another. Mission fit needs to start with the company/organization. Are you large or small, startup or established? Are you embarking on a large campaign or need someone to maintain? Beyond the person, you need to make sure the person fits with the place the organization is in. Culture can exist between all of these variables, but at the same time, might not make a mission fit due to someone being a maintainer over a builder. Culture is a good place to start but mission is a quick second to make sure you align with your new hires and keep a strong team long-term!
