I remember when the whole department was affected by the favoritism of a recently promoted manager. He seemed to favor two particular colleagues who were from his engineering college. He seemed to acknowledge them more in meetings, value their ideas more, and so on... not realizing what it was doing to the morale of the rest of the team! It is when a colleague in one of the networks crafted a case story asking what should the teammates do in such a situation that we (HR) got suspicious. We interviewed more colleagues from the same team to get to the real problem. After interviewing the manager as well, what we realized that it was an unconscious bias. This case tells you how HR has to be responsive to the cues of the colleagues.
