Clear, actionable advice is far more useful than vague comments, as it gives the designer concrete suggestions to work with and helps them understand precisely what needs improvement.

When feedback is presented as a discussion with various alternatives, it opens up a collaborative dialogue that helps me see my design from different perspectives. This approach encourages creative problem-solving and allows me to explore new possibilities that I might not have considered. Moreover, discussing proposals rather than just pointing out flaws creates a more positive and supportive environment, making the feedback process more constructive and less discouraging. It helps me align my work better with the project goals and ultimately enhances the quality of my design.

Suggest areas of improvement abd how to elevate the design. Encourage them to improve and do better with a positive and supportive tone.

Make sure at the start that expectations are clear, for example: You've set a task, the designer completes the task by a deadline and you meet to reflect on the work in the follow up. With this plan in place a small meeting like a follow up becomes the key mechanism in keeping both parties engaged.

Following up also ensures that they feel ok after the conversation. You want for them to feel that they were heard and that it wasn’t a personal comment on them as a person.
