Here's how you can gauge the impact of your writing on readers.

Feedback from readers is always useful and beneficial. Though, depending on who the material is presented, etc., obtaining this feedback can be a challenge. Such feedback, when obtained, should be viewed as a means to improve the way you document, present material. Different people will have different thoughts, considerations, requirements, from your material. So, there feedback could help you better 'round off' your writing style(s), etc. Note: I say style(s), as different types of material require different styles of writing, e.g. reports, user guides, presentations, blogs, etc. Most technical authors will frequently require skills in producing at least some, if not all of these material types.

There is no better scale of judgement metric than that of a Feedback column. Each feedback has a reason lurking behind. Paying attention to each of these feedbacks would allow you to improvise for the better.

When readers tell you what they think about your content, you know what to focus on. Be open to receiving feedback from your readers and take action on them. What are they dissatisfied with? How can you improve on them? What do they love about your writing? How can you replicate it? While writing is a means of self-expression, it is a gift to your audience-- your readers.

This can depend on the stage you're at in your journey. If you're starting with a small social media audience, you want to get good at adding your voice to larger creators' material. Be concise and honest in your opinions. Add insights that encourage further discussion. When you start to build your audience, ask them directly for a contribution. Make it related to them so they feel they are adding value to your content through their contribution. If it's a social media post, ask them to leave their opinion or additional thoughts in the comments section. If it's an email, ask them to reply with the answer to 1 direct question.

Expect feedbacks that would give you a fresh perspective of your writing.

Reader Behavior Changes: Monitor changes in reader behavior or actions that may result from reading your writing. This could include changes in attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors related to the topic you've addressed.

In content marketing, including an opt-in form in a piece of content is an easy way to at least track some aspects of performance. Lots of new adresses on your email list? Then, the piece must have done something right. In addition, analytics tools can tell you the retention time of a page which is also a positive user signal for longform content.

When your writing is engaging or impactful, you gain more readership. Monitoring how the number of your readers changes is a great way to gauge the impact of your writing. When readers enjoy your writing, they share with others, and your audience grows. However, if your readership is stagnant or dwindling, it is a sign that your writing needs improvement.

When writing material you need to consider your audience. So, the material you produce can be understood by them. The challenge here is that it is rare that an audience has a consistent level of understanding of the material being presented. Something you will need to consider in the material you produce. The greater the number of varied audiences you 'present to', the more 'adept' your document style should become for such audiences. Particularly, if you get feedback from such audiences.
