Here's how you can gain practical experience in film production without a job.

If you can't get on a film set, volunteer for: - a make-up artist - a sound recordist - an audio engineer - a set designer - a second AD to a second AD You're only a Kevin Bacon away from the contact you need. If you're not sure where to begin, look at the closing credits of any movie/TV show you like and look at the departments/roles/individuals -- research and connect with them without being weird or creepy about it.

This is how I got started. I volunteered on student film sets and took classes at a community college so I could intern at production companies. I slept on couches for two years. Worked multiple part time jobs to support the volunteering. I didn't monetize the work for years. If you have the stomach for that much sacrifice just to start a career, then I'd say you should go in to entertainment.

There are many resources nowadays to hone your film skills. I started out by joining an on-campus film club and a lot of us varied in knowledge with the goal of getting better in mind. In addition to this, there are many free resources online such as Youtube and Studiobinder (free-version). I recommend David Sandberg's channel (ponysmasher) as he started out making shorts on Youtube and one of them was made into a feature that we now know as Lights out! Lastly, WATCH FILMS! We are always students of the craft. You can peruse through the credits and see what directors, cinematographers, production designers, etc. You like and research their journeys. You will find that everyone's story is unique. Practice and patience. You CAN do it.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience, however be careful and selective. I don’t recommend volunteering for productions actively seeking free labor. The film world is filled with parasitic opportunists looking to take advantage of hungry aspiring talent. Those kinds of productions are often a nightmare, and sometimes even dangerous. It’s better to look for a volunteer situation or an apprenticeship with someone respectable who does the kind of work you’re looking to do, and may not actually be actively looking for help with their work.

Volunteering with a reputable independent organization. Be helpful, and know when to ask questions. Work and observe. Do not speak too much on set. The key is knowing when/what is appropriate. A good company will want you to get value from your volunteer position. They’ll want to teach you, and to recommend you if you’ve been great on set.

No matter its subject, format, or duration, every film made is pre-production for the next film to make - because the best way to experience and improve on both individual and collaborative filmmaking skills is to get reps at them. So write treatments, sketch storyboards, ask questions, take photos, record sounds, footage, or music. Talk and watch films, looking for inspiration of story, technique, lighting, mood, graphics, all of it. Always be creating - it adds up.

I Agree, living in Los Angeles and Atlanta the most important factor of meeting the right peers in your industry is NETWORKING. I can’t stress it enough. 70 percent of my opportunities came from simply going to an event and vibing and running into the right people and exchanging info. Most likely, you all know some of the same people which makes that connection feel comfortable enough to give you more of their attention.

Expanding your network is super important. I can take or leave most networking events however. I think there are more organic ways to start conversations and connections. If you're a cinematographer and wanna connect with others, maybe a plan and outing to go and capture something beautiful together. Or watch a movie. sounds weird but I've seen many movies with filmmakers over the years as a great way to connect and maybe grab dinner before or after.

Networking is everything. It's not about making friends with the aim of carrying out projects, getting jobs and generating business. Networking is everything because it's about creating relationships with colleagues who work in the same industry, who have the same pains, who have different ideas that can complement each other, who have different ideas that never complement each other. It's about mutual respect, about building bridges between competitors thinking about the greater good for everyone. that's about it.

Bruce Lee said, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." In filmmaking, the same applies. Rather than skimming 100 screenplays, it's more insightful to read a single script 100 times. You will discover why characters say or do things, how setups in the first act are paid off by the finale, and how scenes might mirror each other to enhance the narrative. Watch the final film. Compare it to the script to see how camera, lighting, blocking, music, art direction... contribute to the story in ways that are not explicitly written on the page. This analysis helps you understand the transformation from script to screen, revealing the impact of each filmmaking component.

From High School to Universirty level, meeting in a group to watch and comment on films, directors and music elements sharpened my skills set as Director and Producer.

If you believe enough in your script or film project, don’t wait around for others to do everything. Take initiative and hustle and put together your project as much as possible. Try and get some cast, a director, other producers or production companies excited about what you are putting together.

Make friends with people who have the job you want. Learn from them, ask them questions. Try to find someone willing to take you under their wing.

You can't get a job unless you have experience and you can't get experience unless you get a job......Catch 22. To overcome this barrier your either got relatives in the biz or you have to give it away until you build some credentials. Check for crew gigs on Craigs List , 48 hour film competitions. Working for free is a well ensconced tradition in the film biness. Indy producers depend on it. That's the angle you have to play. Go for productions which have an IMDB listing so you can be listed-credential building.
