An engineer is a continuous learner. One needs to have an expertise in at least one technical field. For me it is safety critical control system validation. I have explored methods around this topic and have a PhD in this field. These days I am looking at AI and MBSE and how I can make systems safe. These are my forays around the field. I remember one time when I was being interviewed for a promotion in the Government of India job. The chairman of the panel was a metallurgist, I was explaining control systems. However he caught a mention in my bio data of a journal paper on ancient astronomy that I had authored. We had a good discussion on history and ancient metal pillars in India that did not rust. Needless to say I got promoted.

THERE IS NO SILVER BULLET FOR ANY CAREER, whatever you do, wherever you do, ensure you do it with passion and you are honest and transparent of your work as brutally as possible, this will take you a long long way.....

This is how one can be Productive and Innovative Researcher. Stick to 1) Guiding Principles: a) Be the leader rather than a follower. b) Innovate or perish. c) If OTHERS can, why can’t we? 2) Recasting Thinking Process: a) Introduce Brainstorming in Real Sense, b) Re-design Technical Curriculum, c) Re-design the Teaching Methodology, d) Evaluation Process Enhancement. 3) Conceiving Ideas and Problem Identification: a) Identify Challenges. 4) Two Possibilities: YES or NO, a) If YES, How Can the Idea Be Realized? b) If NO, Why Can’t It Be Done? 5) Outcome: a) The result of this process will always be soul-satisfying innovative technology. As researchers, we contribute to self-reliance, societal progress, and national development.

I love to network via Linkedin with technologists worldwide and participate in many Groups discussions. This keeps me in tune with current technologies, trends, startups, new technologies, funding opportunities etc. My simple goal is to make a Greener, Safer, Healthier Planet for 8 billion, and I do this all virtually, without travel, using Linkedin. I will never be bored and learn new things, help others, daily.

Professional association like ACS, RSC, ICC, RC, IPC , ICH, IMS and conferences like CHEMSPEC, CPHI and many more giving good learning and recorded experience always as a ready reference. Meeting with new company and new people's give mutually beneficial to new products as well as existing products new markets. New path of career opportunities may possible to arise horizon after interaction with multiple agencies and person's. But trust in current organization and loyalty with discipline is more pay then new opportunities with new organisation.

Networking is a two way street. You want to get something from other people, and they want to get something from you. So what can you bring to the table? It always helps if you are passionate about something, if you have studied something deeply, so you can bring new angles or alternative approaches or questions to the discussion. No one wants to feel taken advantage of, work on your specialties.

You've likely heard the euphemism, "It's not what you know, It's who." Often this proclivity for rapport being a more important factor than credentials rings true in most spheres. Although this idea may be initially discouraging to some, it makes a lot of sense, and a strong focus on the social aspects of professional interactions is greatly beneficial to any productive environment. For management, it ties into curating your organization's culture and consolidating individuals such that their strengths and weaknesses interact synergistically. There is a 2006 New York Times article by Paul B. Brown entitled: "Attitude Isn't Eveything, but It's Close". I am compelled to agree with this statement. By its very nature, R&D is immersed in human interaction from brainstorming to the implementation of a viable idea. If one were to continually thrive in the ever-changing R&D environment, one must intentionally devote time and effort to augment their people skills. An inward-looking course of action is to take courses on effective communication and social psychology. And an outward-looking course of action is to regularly solicit peer feedback.

Staying current with latest trend and innovate old practices from time to time will secure a place in research and development. Reading constantly on latest global challenges, international policies and expansion of scope can be one way to move forward and staying current with latest technological advancement. Staying creative is important.

Work with the younger generation. You have experience to share with them, their brains are not on a railway track yet. We tend to have a fixed way of thinking, the younger generation brings a new flavor and thoughts. Enjoy being creative with them. I know a professor whose students sit all over the place in his room and they all discuss. Create this informal environment and innovate together. The corporate culture of booking rooms and having fixed times to interact is not very conducive to innovation. Make them understand that now that the creative idea is in place one needs to work on it. Help them and work with them guiding them through the pain points and pitfalls. Your experience is what is required now to fructify the innovation.

Curiosity to explore new things in your area of interest is very important for R&D works as it drives innovation and discovery. It helps researchers ask new questions, enter and explore uncharted territories and develop novel solutions. Staying curious also ensures continuous learning and adaptation, which are crucial for advancements in any field.

R and D has to be aligned to markets. Every market has it's own implicit needs from every adjacent as well as breakthrough products. Developing knowledge of these deep rooted needs, makes it easy to position and refine products. In a fiercely competitive market, Customer will appreciate and spend only for his/her own needs. Hence Feature inclusion and exclusivity can be a way to win game. So constantly moving out of office and immersing with customers is important

Knowledge of industry, customer needs, and competitive landscape are essential. Ask these questions: 1. Is there a need in market for this product? 2. Who are the customers and how much are they willing to pay? 3. What are the top 3 "must have" attributes that customers want in a product? 4. What is the projected volume during next 5 years? 4. Why should we make the product? do we have a moat or a brand? 6. Will this product be challenged in future by cheap imports? 5. What is the timing for launch? 6. What are the regulatory and sustainability needs in market? Answers to the above questions help in prioritizing this product over others in the organization and allocating resources.

I did a coursera course once where the professor was clear that adaptation was the key. Everyone is enamored with the term innovation. Innovation is only one way to adapt. Be alert to trends and changes in the market and technologies. Reading magazines on technology are better than very specific technical papers. Adaptation is a natural survival instinct. Use this, be connected to the environment and stay alive.

I do not think you can actually future-proof your career in R&D. On the other hand, I think you can future-proof yourself if you focus on self-development and improvement continuously. It is unpredictable how our jobs will change and how research will be done in 20-30 years. But for sure, great people will be needed. Be one of those ;)

As the proverb says change is only constant. As I mentioned earlier, today delivering a great Product demands fusion of many facets of knowledge. In the path of innovation, many insights come from looking at other businesses. For eg Engineering organizations can learn from pharma businesses. Many a things one can learn from studying existing products. It becomes essential to implement these learnings appropriately. All this is not possible with a traditional rigid mindset. So change.. adapt to change in science, competition, consumer behavior......

Assessing the ecosystem and having continued pursuit to identify future needs of the society can help one to achieve future free R&D career. It’s not that future free R&D career is the only important thing but it is always desirable to have successful and enjoyable journey of R&D which can be made possible by 1) remaining abreast of latest developments in areas given field. 2) developing simple, scalable and affordable technologies. 3) societal relevance of R&D. 4) continuous upgradation of knowledge and skills. 5) associate with relevant R&D and industry establishments.

It’s involves a commitment to continuous learning and skill diversification. Staying updated with the latest advancements through online courses, workshops, and industry conferences is essential. Developing expertise in emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, and data analytics, alongside soft skills such as project management and effective communication, enhances your versatility. Additionally, cultivating a mindset of innovation, creativity, and flexibility allows you to adapt to changing industry demands and seize new opportunities.
