In my decade as an assistant professor of chemical engineering, I've learned that innovation in design is an art. Solutions are often simpler and more natural, rather than overly complex and tech-heavy. By applying physical laws found in nature and utilizing straightforward, cost-effective approaches, significant innovation can be achieved. To foster creativity, stay informed on global trends and explore ideas in that realm. Areas such as addressing climate change, carbon capture, resource recycling, waste-to-energy conversion, energy efficiency, and water/fuel conservation will likely be future focal points, alongside advancements in artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.

Look for waste, whether off spec product, by product, or streams with waste energy or material losses. Then characterize the waste composition, chemistry, physical form and size. Can it be sold as is, for what, where? Can it be polished or cleaned for reuse/recycle in the process? Can it substitute for a consumption of high quality main product and so on. You'll probably need bench or bucket scale experiments (read up on factorial design of experiments, tests of significance, etc.). Continuous bulk processes may be most suitable for these methods. I probably diverted/reused/eliminated waste materials equivalent to 5-8% of the process design capacity in my first employment and had great fun and learnt a lot while doing it.
