Here's how you can foster creativity in the construction industry.

After more than 20 years in the construction and real estate industry, these are the ways I have experienced to boost creativity: - think outside of the box - brainstorming with colleagues with different views, different ways of doing things, different backgrounds - use a less formal environment to brainstorm - promote a culture of communication and collaboration based on mutual respect - empower employees - set rewards for innovation - create a safe environment for risk-taking - encourage continuous learning / education / training - leading by example

This is very critical especially when people of different nationality work on the same project. A good example is the difference in SI units for any measurements, this can be a challenge if not addressed at the start of construction. It's critical to align all involved in the project from the start on what standards will be accepted and that everyone must work in line with such standards. Imagine having people from different countries others use yards for measurements while others are using metres this can be a huge mess to the project.

To foster creativity in the construction industry as a project manager, you can: * Encourage collaborative brainstorming sessions where team members can freely share ideas and solutions. * Provide opportunities for professional development and training to expand skill sets and encourage innovative thinking. * Implement a culture that values experimentation and learning from failures, fostering a mindset of continuous improvement. * Embrace technology and innovative construction methods to inspire new approaches to problem-solving. * Recognize and reward creative contributions from team members to reinforce a culture of innovation.

I've found that within the construction industry, digital transformation is behind. There are so many technologies out there but people have been reluctant to adopt them out of fear of trying something new to them. By embracing and leveraging technology processes and safety can be drastically improved. Now that new legislation has come into place demanding digital transformation it's more important than ever.

Sometime team members need to make a decision on the fly in the field. I always encouraged making a decision, if it’s the right decision we acknowledge the choice. If it’s not the best decision but at least the person was decisive we chalk up to a learning experience and work together to make any necessary corrections.

In the high stakes of construction, safe workplace is paramount including the safety of ideas, and a good place to start is: 1. Focus on physical and creative safety initiatives 2. Build not just concrete and steel, but behavior based safety systems 3. Implement open communication strategy to embrace diversity of thoughts and the buy-in of employee and stakeholders.

Your team needs to know that they're a team. By that I mean no one's opinions or feelings are of more value than the others and without eachother you are no better off. The creativity, problem solving, and morale of the office will see big changes.

One effective strategy I've discovered is fostering a safe and open environment among colleagues and subordinates, encouraging them to freely contribute to discussions and decision-making. For example, if a site engineer has an innovative idea for a project, they should feel comfortable sharing it. I inspire this openness by sharing my own past mistakes in the industry, which encourages even the more introverted team members to voice their ideas.

Unfortunately, due to the competitive nature of winning construction projects, implementing flexibility to get thinking is overlooked. In an industry where innovation is critical, I think there should be a session each week, maybe 1 hour where the team look at how things could be done differently or better. However, for this to happen, we would need to tender to companies who believe in this approach, as doing it just to tick a box would make the sessions unsuccessful.

I have started to see awards for innovation within construction and heard about some amazing things being done with projects By adopting new and innovative methods on projects you will find the rewards come from that and will outweigh any cons.
