Here's how you can express your career goals to your boss in an E-Learning job.

Before you ask for a meeting with your boss, it’s crucial to ask yourself some key questions. Jot down your strengths, such as proficiency in creating HLDs, as well as areas for development, such as improving storytelling skills. Identify which skill sets you wish to enhance or develop further, such as adaptive learning, & specify the types of projects you wish to lead. A convo with your boss should have a sense of purpose & direction & for that it’s imp to provide your boss with a clear roadmap of your career aspirations. Since you’re initiating the meeting, take the lead in steering the convo. This not only showcases your commitment to personal & professional growth but also facilitate an effective communication with your boss.

Obviously, taking the question as it reads – with that in mind, you are either someone who develops, facilitates or assesses tools used for e-learning. Whether working for a large organisation or a service provider, it is important to do your own homework, and potentially find a niche within the e-learning market that has yet to be maderised. Remember, that e-learning should always been seen as part of the overall process, it is important to remember that not everyone learns at the same pace

We all started somewhere within our chosen career paths, and giving someone that opportunity to learn and gain new skills is both rewarding and satisfying to see when someone understand a process or is at ‘Subconscious Unholiness’ this means you have done your job. Unfortunately, many companies will always place learning at the bottom of a pile, as it ultimately costs money, yet having a team that are unprepared nor equipped to deliver, can also ultimately cost money and a company’s reputation. Training is also an ongoing element of anyone’s career, and as such we learn each and every day in our own way, and as such enhance and build our own toolbox!

When putting together a proposal for your own succession planning, it is important to make sure that it is on your bosses horizon, and not a sudden surprise or shock. KISS – Keep It Short Sweet, bullet points that can be rated on, however ask someone who does not necessarily understand your work, and ask them to review and see if they are able to determine and get correct message. Try not to waffle or go off on a tangent, keep focused, and remember what the goal is, once you have this then you can build your proposal!

You do not need to be all razzamatazz with the presentation / proposal – yet you should be proud of what you have put together. The challenge will be discussing this with your boss, when they are in a good mood. It should ideally form part of your performance review, or at a appropriate time / meeting in which you can express your own goals. Think about 5 areas in which you would like to further develop and enhance, basically you have now created your own weaknesses.

As it says on the tin – take onboard feedback this will help you assess your own needs. If at first it is not successful, then ask some open questions, that enable you to get your boss to give you the answers on what they are looking for. Try, try again, however know when to stop. It might also be that if your boss is not engaging, and you are unable to resolve, then maybe you need to look for a company that will enable you to achieve your objectives, goals, aims and dreams.

Show alignment. Demonstrate how your career goals contribute to the objectives of the team and the organization. This shows that you're thinking about the bigger picture and how your growth can benefit everyone. Stay flexible. While it's important to have goals, be open to adjustments based on feedback or organizational changes. Flexibility shows adaptability and a willingness to grow in new directions.
