Surprisingly a lot of people undermine the basics but truly the fundamentals are what you build on. Having a firm foundation gives you an associative learning advantage. You begin to see things and understand concepts before you even become a pro. Animation, UI design, Graphics Design, all share some fundamental principles. Knowing the basics of Graphic Design comes handy when transitioning into Motion Graphics.

My expertise in graphic design spans from poster creation to front-end app development. A notable project was the front-end design of a mobile app, which pushed me to extend my skills into UI design. We all need basic training, though, you do not need to be blinded only by the ability to use software on the first day. Here we need to understand that after the basic training, is like when you get a driver's license, meaning you are allowed to drive, but you also need to train (driving) as much as you can, to become a better driver, to us a better designer. People need to understand that designing needs skills, but one of the best architects in Spain, didn't go to the Architecture University, he had architects surrounding him, who did the job, but the ideas... here is where the magic starts, were coming from his creativeness and some drawings done by hand. We need the tools and be trained, but we also need to be passionate.

I think it's logical to say that if you want to have something, learn to get it. Now, we need to gain skills in order to impact more in the field that we want to work. When you are choosing your way, you need to learn first. Conduct research. Be ready to use data to help you gain more skills related to your dream job in design. When you are more on the design graphic, be ready to learn all the tools that are around it. When you are more on the user experience, be ready to learn the value of research and the people who give you feedback. But, be ready to learn the "real" skills, which are the soft skills, according to one famous person. In design, for me, your real skills are communication and adaptability.

I can't agree more than this statement. You can be the best designer ever, but you need to be known, for two basic reasons: 1. It gives you opportunities to have projects 2. It also allows you to see and evaluate other points of view. You get better as you share, and when you receive some info back, then your brain starts to open doors that you never thought they were. So basically your worth is your contacts, since sometimes you do not need to know everything, but you need to know who is good at things you don't know, this way you learn, and improve your net of contacts.
