Volunteer and network! I found those worked best for me when I was at the start of my career. I contacted the person at PRSA - Public Relations Society of America - who was organizing the local monthly lunch event and asked if I come could as that person's guest. Slightly bold, I guess, and I got a yes. I chatted with and got business cards from everyone I could at the luncheon, and from there I also took every opportunity to volunteer for PRSA events. I had resumes ready at those. It helped me land my first job, which was as an internal communications assistant.
