Many folks talk about the value of active listening on prospect calls so I want to focus on active listening internally. Suppose you can understand the broader needs of the organization and figure out how to help solve them. In that case, it will lead to career advancement as well as more opportunities to solve bigger and more impactful problems for the organization. So on the next all hands or call with the product/marketing/sales team, listen intently to the problems the org is trying to solve. Ask questions and understand why then work towards helping to solve them. This will definitely help progress your career

Compendious; one of my new favorite words to describe how you should speak in general but especially as a SE. It means "containing or presenting the essential facts of something in a comprehensive but concise way." When you can explain something in depth but concisely, it shows your mastery of the topic and your speaking skills. Making something easy to consume is a SEs superpower. Remember, simple does not mean easy. Oftentimes, if you are able to make it sound simple, you've spent a lot of time thinking about how exactly to do that.

Consider starting a program for upskilling your colleagues in SDR, CSM, or other teams. I used to host a monthly zoom called Demo Dojo where I showed the CSMs how to demo a specific feature then we broke into small breakout groups to practice the demos together. CSMs benefit from know the product better and you are teaching them to demo better so the customers can see how to use the product better. SDRs are usually only in role for a year or two then look for ways to transfer to other departments. They will benefit from knowing the product better, so they can describe it accurately, and they will appreciate you hovering them a chance to hone their SC skills and try for the job.

A career in Sales Engineering is made of countless engagements and interactions that add value. You'll find yourself most often in a learning position of the conversation, and by knowing more about your customers' challenges, plans for future deployments, and business goals, your alignment as a solution provider will evolve. Occasionally, you will also have the opportunity to add value.
