The ML models that optimize the machine's operations should always run at Edge. This ensures Low Latency and High Availability. This has to be factored in right at the inception in order to select the right kind of Edge Device. However, Training of the Models should happen in the Cloud based on the Data sent to Data Lakes.

I am the best example for this.. Having established and lead a dedicated IT /Digitalization Team for one of the Siemens Factory, I can say this is of paramount importance!!! This is a complete new shift that's already happening. Today, Factories are already hugely hiring for IT Professionals. The synergy between IT, OT & Domain is the must for a fool proof Digital Transformation.

Here are 2 other things I wanna add 1. Well defined Digital Strategy and Outcomes of Digitalization. - Smart Manufacturing should make a business case and if done right, can bring upto 20% of cost reduction. - However, it's a nice slippery slope if you get caught into fancy digital ideas. - So, It should always make a business case or atleast add up to it. 2. Cybersecurity - As we connect every "Thing" (as in Internet of "Things") on Shopfloor to Network.. We are also opening them up for vulnerabilities and attacks. Any smallest backdoor can bring complete production to halt. - This is where Cybersecurity has to ensured at every layer. Hardening of Edge Devices, Segmentation of Networks, Secure Development of Apps and much more.
