From my experience, the importance of understanding the basics can not be overemphasized. If you have a good grasp of the basic principles involved in process design, it can serve as an excellent building block for future learning. It will also help you to understand and take part in conversations when process design concepts are being discussed. Moreover, it will enable you to be able to ask relevant questions when you are confused. So my advice to aspiring process design engineers is to work hard to get a good grasp of the basics. Understand the thermodynamic and engineering principles taught in your undergraduate studies and you will be in a good position to build a career as a process engineer.
