From a trainer's perspective, using humor is a common phenomenon which helps to engage audiences with the presenter. And more importantly, use of humor can be used for a transitional purpose while moving from one topic to another topic. To evaluate the effectivity, we need to analyse: 1. Content depth (Need to find the relevancy with the topic) 2. The target audience (Based on the target group, the use of humors and anecdotes should be changed for same content, check their reactions) 3. Timing (If the humors are used in wrong time without any relevancy with content, the entire presentation flow can be disrupted) 4. Control over the discussion (Too many discussions on these, shouldn't kill the flow of main content)

While I do not agree that “laughter is the best medicine”, I do consider that humour can alleviate many situations we find ourselves in the delivery of health care. As with the delivery of all presentations, meetings and interactions with groups, read the room first. A professional presentation especially those including community representation is not a stand up gig and in my professional setting, humorous asides and anecdotes should not constitute more than 1% of the content or time.

J'aime ajouter une touche d'esprit (plus que de l'humour au sens de faire des blagues) pour captiver mon audience, renforcer le message de la présentation et laisser un souvenir de l'interaction (le cerveau enregistre mieux les moments liés à des émotions). Il convient cependant d'être prudent et de bien connaitre son auditoire, un trait d'esprit peut être offensant. J'essaie de rester pertinent (lien avec le sujet/public cible) et efficace (au service du message) mais surtout attentif à la réaction du public pour placer le curseur au bon endroit.

You need to know and understand the cultural background of the audience to set your own boundaries. Then by trial and error during your speech, you shall adapt based of direct feedback.

In my experience, the latter is a much better timing as it eases off the seriousness & boredom that may have set in; on the other hand starting with a joke may compromise the seriousness with which the audience step into the presentation. That's when things can go against once's favour - rehearsed Humor or anecdotes are useful when you are presenting to a Ted X kind audience where the purpose is a motivational speech or people have come specifically to listen to you - a place where you have the stand and it will remain yours from start to finish. For product, board room, client, investor presentations, the delivery style will vary - the level of interaction may be critical, others point of view may be of critique - One needs to have a few delivery styles ready, when gauging the audience and select on spot.

Make it natural. It's more better if you could engage your audience while delivering. Make them participate with you, like you see stand up comedians engage with their audience interactively. During presentation too this will work. Engage your audience when you deliver humour or anecdotes.

How much? 2- What Kind of audiance you will face? The result of this analysis will guide you with the range of humor you can use always focusing the main objective, which is to make sure your message will be really understood by the audiance, with or without humor.

This could be walking from side to side on the stage, the body language of the presenter, how they laugh at their own humor, and very importantly including the audience. As an audience member, listening to an excellent speaker, and asked for a tough/opinion of what they have said, but also throwing my own humor in their given observing how the crowd has reacted can exponentially make the presentation historical. A powerful presentation poses intriguing questions that provoke thought. It also provides opportunities for the audience to interact and use the power of dialogue to further the agenda. Build dedicated time for mini interactions into your presentation flow rather than waiting for questions at the end of the session and encourage your audience to ask questions whenever they feel like during the presentation as well.

Try to involve participants in answering yes or no questions together. use simple humor appropriate to the age of the participants

Si un chiste o anécdota no funciona no obligues a la risa, solo ten preparada una respuesta que si lo haga, por ejemplo "creo que al único que le suceden estas cosas es a mi" o "perdón, mi humor es muy básico" Siempre toma todo con naturalidad, no obligues a la risa, y se auténtico, puesto que la alegría, al igual que la tristeza, se nota. Ten presente el tipo de público. Hay algunas audiencias que son resistentes al humor, y contar un chiste puede no ser adecuado. Intentarlo siempre, sin saturar a la audiencia. Recuerda que el humor hay que manejarlo bien, puesto que algunas situaciones pueden reír y otras pueden herir.

Mach es bunt, mach es anschaulich, mach es laut, mach es anders! Niemand kann "Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit" mehr h?ren! Wenn man sein eigenes Thema überzeugt, begeistert, lustig und locker vorzutragen in der Lage ist, macht es allen Beteiligten deutlich mehr Spa?!

Balance! To strike a chord is one thing but to start conversations and momentum for the desired result of presentation is the ultimate goal. This can only be obtained once there is perfect balance of every aspect whether it is audience, storytelling, addressing why, tone or timing. Second most important thing is "Inclusion". A presentation must not be too good that one feels overwhelmed as that feeling of great presentation might stay as a memory but won't achieve results. So there must be elements of inclusion where everybody has something to either share or take away. A good presentation is like a perfect recipe which can't just be tasty, but also should retain nutritional value and balance of spices.

To add more to the presentation part, make sure you have the right amount of information on one slide. Never make it a long presentation where there would be a tea break in between unless it is a Quarterly or Yearly forecasting presentation. Less number of slides and adding in more of the humor would make it better not just to present but also for the audience.
