To measure success of any programming, I recommend starting with a logic model that clarifies the key activities of your program and what outcomes (short, medium, long) they lead to for individuals, your organization, and broader society (if relevant). Once you have these sketched out, you can begin thinking about how you would measure each of these components to better understand the work you are doing and the extent to which it leads to the outcomes you expect. If you only list goals, I fear you’ll miss the critical connections between what you do and how those actions/activities do (or don’t) lead to particular outcomes.

Creating a structured feedback loop is essential for evaluating your internship program. Regular check-ins with interns and their supervisors provide insights into the interns' learning progress and team impact. Use formal methods like surveys and performance reviews, as well as informal conversations, to gather feedback. This honest communication helps assess the program’s effectiveness and highlights areas for improvement, ensuring a continuously evolving and successful internship experience.

Establish Regular Check-ins: Schedule weekly or bi-weekly check-in meetings with each intern and their supervisor. Use these sessions to discuss the intern's progress, challenges, and areas for improvement. Encourage open and honest communication in a supportive environment.

This is in many ways just as important (to the intern) as an internship that affirms a potential career decision. As nonprofit leader, I always support the intern’s own self-reflection.

Share success stories of former interns who have advanced in their careers to inspire current interns. Additionally, foster a supportive community among interns through regular networking events and peer collaboration opportunities, enhancing their overall experience and your program’s effectiveness.
