Examples of good GCPs include elevated building corners, ridge lines, utility poles, church steeples and radio towers. As the tops of many of these GCPs are not directly accessible, they may need to be surveyed using a total station in addition to a GPS.

An essential element of error analysis is having accurate ground truth. One way to achieve this is to position calibration targets within the collection area. Calibration targets may be geometric primitives (e.g., cubes, pyramids, elevated rectangles and triangles) or more complex structures such as sloped slotted bar targets. Often overlooked in error analysis is the tendency of some lidars to overestimate the size of elevated, high reflectivity surfaces (e.g., white building roofs). This tendency to overshoot and report false detections at edges should be included in the error analysis.
