Here's how you can ensure transparency and fairness in large group decision making.

Of course, one assumes a culture built on transparency. I have never been in a situation where I left a decision of consequence up to a large group. I ask for the input of a group, but that comes from someone who distills the interests of the group down to their essence. That input is then integral to the decision process. Sometimes that input is the key determinator. Outside that I will often go with the consensus of my SVPs sometimes giving my take at the start of the discussion or at the end. The rest of the time I listen. Typically, my vote is equal to that of a senior teammate. I listen with an open mind but have on occasion, depending on the issue at hand, said my vote will count the number of the professionals in the room + one!!

Whenever mediating a discussion with a large group of people, setting clearer and transparent goals and voicing them in a manner that they are undeniably acceptable to everyone who is on board helps move the discussion in the right direction. If there is a clarity of purpose and goals, there are lesser chances of people digressing into useless banter and hence one can reach faster decision making even with a very large set of people but if there is no consensus on the ultimate goal then people will keep arguing about micro subjects rather than focusing on the macro issues.

Participation by all is encouraged, enabled and empowered) - PROBLEM STATEMENT ( Consensus and Clarity on the Problem and/or Central Idea under discussion) - PATIENT LISTENING (Deep listening with an open mind to all the PROs & CONs point of views) - PERFORMANCE of the group must be celebrated

Open dialogue is one of the key elements in the well-being of the working environment. Without an open dialogue, attempts to develop the company or operations will not be as successful and people will most likely not be as motivated and hardworking as they would be when they feel that their opinions are listened to.

Always be a patient listener. While you may set the tone of the meeting right and set the team into a thought process that drives them in the right direction with correct goal setting right in then very beginning of the discussion yet taking active feedback is the key. Never close your doors to feedback or else you might actually fall into the trap of being unaware of the most obvious things that everyone else knows but you don’t just because you closed your doors to a feedback loop that you should have created. So whilst you march forward with clear decision making make sure that your team is fearless enough to be able to guide you with the right feedback so that you can keep taking corrective measures at the right time.

Being an active listener is the key to taking any sort of feedback. Also ! be grounded, be present in that moment because situations that are unknown to you may come up and you may not have the answer to that feedback immediately. Be transparent and maintain equality!

In a group dynamic there are always different opinions different personalities (shy, passionate, negative, cheerleader, etc). If you are the owner of the project or facilitating the discussion your job is to find the red thread within everyone's input. Your other role is to be the core, center, the Northstar (so to speak). That means being strong enough to stop anyone from dominating the conversation or draw out anyone who is not contributing. I find it is easier to send out some key questions before gather the answers and present the ideas and thoughts anonymously so all are involved at the start.
