Define which are the parameters that are the most flexible (time, budget, team) and scope your milestones and the whole project accordingly. Some products can't be planned from day 1, but you should strive to answer lingering questions and mitigate risk as soon as possible. A solid plan has room for change while still delivering.

If you're an indie developer, this is for you. Try to gain a comfortable balance of action and planning. All planning with no action+prototyping is likely to feel like a drag. But ensure that you have detailed plans in a hierarchical structure with sub-goals and long term goals. It is supremely important to know your relationship with deadlines and plan accordingly.

Set a deadline with specific measurable goals. Like 1. The game is released, 2. The game sells X copies, and 3. The game is mostly positively reviewed. If by your deadline you haven't achieved your goals, stop. Stop that project. Move onto the next thing. Ideally your first game is a mini game you build in a month. Then your second takes 3 months. Then 6. And then 1 year. By then you'll have spent just under 2 years, have released 4 games at increasing scope. If you can't do that, don't make your own games. Go seek a career in games instead.

This seems to be the biggest challenge in most game projects from my perspective. I would mention that reaching out to your specialists earlier, involving them in planning, and defining early what has to be in and what is nice to have way more critically, that way you can prioritize better and finalize one feature before moving on to a feature that isn’t essential. A lot of features that get cut could’ve been descoped way earlier, if we paid attention more closely to unhealthy stress levels in our teams. The time saved not working on that feature, and the motivation gained from safeguarding your workers from unnecessary stress, might create a game that has more rounded features, better balance and avoid burnout.

Scope Creep is one of the biggest challenges in game development. "What if the game also had this feature or that feature" is one of the best ways to ensure a game never reaches completion. Making sure everyone knows what they're supposed to do and when they need to do it helps everyone stay focused and get things done on time. When everyone talks openly, it makes it easier for everyone to work together and make the project a success.

It is easy to burn yourself out during long swathes of non-stop development, so taking time for respite throughout development will help you keep going for the long haul. Taking this time will also allow you to look over what you have done, and ensure everything works before continuing to forge ahead. Working non-stop will not only take a toll on you, but your project as well, as it creates room for mistakes that could cost you even more precious time remedying in the end.
