In my experience, creating a succession plan is a basic expectation from any leader. Not when they are retiring but at any given time in their entire career. That’s a pre requisite to be a good leader, identify talent, develop talent, and have your succession ready at all times.

Develop these candidates through targeted training, mentoring, and rotational assignments across various roles to broaden their experience and readiness. Communicate your succession plan clearly to all stakeholders to align expectations and reduce uncertainties. Establish a timeline for the transition, allowing ample time for the successor to assume responsibilities gradually under your guidance. Regularly review and adjust the plan based on evolving business needs and personal development of the potential successors.

One thing I have found useful is to define mentorship term or period so as to ensure seamless passing of the baton between incoming and outgoing. There is always different views on the timing, in my experience the ideal time is the end of the cycle of a strategy while ushering the next. Feedback must not largely be sponteneous, but structured, based solely on data or validated information on achievement of specified objectives or targets. The major stumbling block to be avoided in feedback is subjectivity. Feedback must always be objective

Oft ist dem aber vorgelagert, dass wir versuchen müssen, uns über unsere eigene Motivation und Zielsetzung klar zu werden. Es gilt das Loslassen mit einzuplanen und auch zu üben.
