Ask questions. Don’t be afraid as no question regarding safety is ever a dumb question. Also read the policies, procedures and work instructions as much as you can.

One of the first things to do as an intern in any organization with regards to health and safety I believe is to find out the policies,documents and other relevant materials that clearly define the confines of health and safety within the workplace More also asking the right questions and deriving the right answers from the right people within the workplace

Me llama la atención, aquellas plantas industriales, que para realizar trabajos en un andamio, a partir de 1,5 m o 2,00 m se consideran trabajos en altura y por tanto todos los trabajadores que realizan su labor en el andamio, deben usar el arnés de seguridad. Por otro lado, en esas mismas plantas, los accesos a columnas, reactores, etc.. a través de escaleras de gato, no disponen de líneas de vida. Claramente es una situación a mejorar.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to work in both Operations and HSE. Ultimately, I chose to pursue a career in HSE. During that time, I was eager to learn as much as possible, asking questions and engaging with colleagues across different departments to understand their roles and how they contribute to the organization. My curiosity helped me gain a broad knowledge base and valuable insights that were instrumental in shaping my career path.

I always learn the most about safety from watching employees. They know their jobs much better than I know it. I’m there to help them fine tune their safety and to make sure that management ensures their safety.

Find the smartest person in the room and watch and learn what they do, ask the questions even if you think they have no relevance, knowledge is key

As an intern transitioning into the HSE department, I had the privilege of working under a mentor who greatly influenced my development. I closely observed his courage, charisma, and determination to complete tasks, even when facing unfamiliar challenges. Additionally, I learned valuable lessons from other colleagues, picking up various approaches to delivering HSE duties. This experience has shaped me into an effective safety professional, capable of working independently with little supervision.

Team, Please see below another point of view when observing peers. As an intern, watching how others work, especially if they are not following established protocols, can highlight inefficiencies or areas where protocols may be outdated or unnecessarily rigid. This could prompt discussions about improving workflows and adapting practices to better suit current needs. Learn to keep an open mind when observing peers, take notes of areas that can use improvement. Strategize on corrective actions so when you address issues you also have the solution. Always use exercises to test different potential scenarios. For example on a fire drill decide where the fire could be and use that as your basis. That might take a well used escape route out of action and force people to use routes they’re less familiar with. This is a good thing and can lead to useful learning. Learning from each exercise and changing processes or training as required is vital

As an intern, I actively participated in all aspects of HSE activities, including toolbox talks, emergency drills (both planned and unplanned), vessel inspections, Gemba walks, Kaizen initiatives, fire training, audits, and contractor site visits. I was fortunate to have a supportive and accommodating team who were eager to teach me, regardless of my intern status.

An intern that’s too keen to contribute can mistakenly be cast as too up front, full on etc However, one who asks genuine questions, preferably open ones and gathers information will be seen in a more positive light. This is an opportunity for seasoned staff and superiors to hear themselves answer these questions, go over the content, perhaps catch gaps and further embed the correct practices
