The very best strategic CFOs are able to work in the gray areas to achieve the organization's goals. So many accountants are raised on black and white solutions that they forget how to work in the gray. Most of the time the hard problems will need gray area thinking. When the executive team is planning, they need to know the range of options and the risk associated with them. A CFO or financial analyst that can work in the gray areas enables the leadership team to develop solutions that might not otherwise be possible.

Amazing collaboration (Ive only seen one company able to do it). Imagine a company that is passionate about customer service, so much so that the CEO has asked the organization to focus on customer experience and not revenue. Enter the CFO, a collaborator who understands the dynamics of the environment and isn't afraid to think outside of the box. In coordination with the innovation team, she sets internal policy to allow customer experience to be "quantified" as if it is a benefit to the company. That meant that if the new idea saved the customer money, time, clicks, or whatever; it could compete for funding as equally as if it earned the company revenue. The results: amazing customer service recognized as best-in-class two years in a row.
