Since 2010, I wanted to mount stages and different platforms. I had a strong desire to be a public speaker. However, this seemed like a dream since I couldn't figure it out myself. I jumped to videos of seasoned speakers to get a glimpse of their knowledge and journey but still got no accurate direction. I offered comments on a renowned speakers session in at virtual conference in 2015 . This is how I got spotlighted by this person who took me as a mentee and started giving me advice and also suggested courses to help my journey. He also became my accountability partner and has since elevated my career as his protege. I owe my success to my mentor, and I would recommend a mentor for all newbies. Mentors makes this journey productive.

I invested in public speaking courses on UDEMY and a more robust course on how to get paid speaking/consulting opportunities through job postings. Hearing about the experiences of others regardless of their level was intriguing. It made me feel more at ease that it is something I can do well despite being an introvert who has often avoided speaking in school! I have had the privilege of mentoring others in the area of self-leadership, speaking in a professional context and soft power. We must learn to not always come from a place of force but flow. I have done my best work in a flow state. Mentors are helpful but we must also keep in mind the differences we all have. All the mentors I learned from were mostly extroverts.

Finding the right mentor is important in most fields. Then combine with increasing skills and accountability to further your own skills. A good mentor now only gives you honest feedback but can make suggestions that you may not have thought of yet. They are part cheer leader and part drill sergeant with the ratio determined by your needs. This relationship can be a growth period for both the mentor and mentor with deep levels of trust developing. Having an unbiased pair of eyes is helpful in many fields. Make sure that you and your mentor have the same expectations to prevent any possible misunderstandings in the future

Mentorship is a great form of interactive learning where you learn from industry experts. It is even more effective when you get a mentor who is vulnerable about their failures, mistakes and the lessons learnt. Mentors can also link you up with opportunities for public speaking where you get to perfect and sharpen your communication skills.

One should be open to feedback and take it with the right mindset in a positive way. One should ask for feedback from peers and mentors. Embracing constructive criticism and taking corrective steps to improve your public speaking skills in the future is important. Learning from your mistakes and not repeating them is the key to success.

It is often said practice makes perfect but the goal I have as a paid public speaker is to inspire and inform. I am not perfect at public speaking but I am purpose-driven and seek to connect with the audience in various ways. It also helps if you know the type of speaking event you will do so you can aptly prepare. At a college, I can do a Powerpoint presentation and for a bigger event that is just me speaking, I would have to have an idea of outline of what I would address not that I would necessary read a script but I would have something prepared to ensure I cover all the relevant points I'd like to address. In a church setting, I may just have a cue card with main points instead of a typed document. Practice always.

Very sound advice on practice with public speaking. I have always coached clients to use the formula of 90% Plan and Practice 10%. Performance with Passion. Practice until you have the confidence to speak without relying heavily on your notes. This will also help with controlling the nerves as well. Make the nerves work for you not against you. Passion is a must to entertain the audience. When an audience sit down to absorb your thoughts and ideas they want to be entertained otherwise they will switch off.

Regardless of the topic, it's always helpful to bring new case studies and stories to the mix. Staying on top of the latest developments in your area of expertise is important. Where appropriate, include commentary on the latest events/trends in your presentation. Remember, your audience 'choose' to spend their time with you. It's worth something. Show that you care.

There are a variety of classes you can take to improve your professional speaking. I find a mixture of speaking class through other well established speakers and other adjacent classes can help. For example, you can take storytelling classes, technology classes (to help your presentation) and then classes on your speaking topics. Also, some organizations (like NSA) have vaults of very valuable classes accessible that can help you continue to learn.

Attending a wide variety of educational forums and classes provides more analogies from which to draw speaking material. Be a lifetime learner! Whether from real life or adapting as fictional metaphors, analogies help reinforce your speaking points in the audience. Occasionally, your analogies provide identification with listeners’ own experiences. Also, use speaking engagements’ post session gatherings as opportunities to expand your network and listen to commentaries from your audience, one-on-one. Obtain other research areas from them to refine/enhance your delivery. To make a point, an analogy here is Jefferson’s quote hoping for “A well-informed electorate…”

Always keep honing your craft. That may take watching others speak, hiring a coach to give you unbiased feedback, or updating a particular skill through a program with a higher level skill wise speaker. Many speakers also like to teach. Be open to new techniques and new knowledge. Speaking is a craft and like other crafts requires ongoing learning.

Between internet search, YouTube, myriad of free online courses, AI chatbots, and research articles and papers there is plenty of content if there is sufficient time, interest, and effort put into learning a new topic. This combined with practical experience in the subject is what creates unique value for others to learn from.

Sign up for acting classes. Find a night class and do improv or any acting, mime, dance, drama class. A stage is a stage and so many speakers have not spent time learning anything about stagework, voice work or performance

Continuous learning helps with your knowledge base, enriching your talks and bringing in different perspectives for example the new advances in different sectors learnt, new knowledge in different industries. In some sectors having the Education certificates and titles is valued for example in the sciences, environmental industries. It also helps with expanding your network and often Therein lies opportunities to collaborate, sought out for speaking based on your educational attainment.
