I have already noticed for three different cases that gathering data with M&A competencies is definitively not a guarantee of success and reliability especially for strategic acquisitions. Used experienced and operational finance professionals are key not to stay at the surface of data analysis to avoid quick conclusion that are not properly considering the financial risks and issues. For instance, stock inventory, AP & AR accounts, IT systems and interfaces need to be properly and carefully assess to insure the right level of data understanding.

A CFO is either a risk analyzer or is lacking a key competency to play his role within the organization. To be able to model the value chain of the organization, is a starting point. To identify internal and external factors impacting it, starts with the risks analysis. Potential events, trends, actions with negative impacts have to be identified. And finally using simulation modeling will materialize risk occurrence and financial consequences. Analysis of historical data can help, past experiences could be another valuated option, bench marking, professional literature and regular exchanges with your peers are completing the tool box to be used. Good analysis is OK but don't forget model accuracy and robustness.

How are you going to achieve a target if you don't fix goals for you and the others? Of course it has to be properly communicated as part of an understandable strategy addressing stake holders interests and motivations. To properly understand, identify, and define relevant goals is not an easy game but it's going to secure commitments and final achievement. By experience a unique top down approach could be a bit risky. To share individual and global perspectives, associate different competencies and illustrate dependencies should strengthen team spirit and associated effectiveness. When the objective is to reach the top of the mountain it will be important to put in place intermediate stages and settle the right follow-up and support.
