In a recent project, I needed to make a key decision affecting our schedule and budget. To make the best choice, I first collected and studied all the important data, keeping in mind the possible risks. I also involved the team in the process by having discussions where everyone could share their ideas and concerns. This not only helped us make a more informed decision but also made the team feel more involved and committed to the project

I agree that it is essential to use data and facts to support our decisions, but when brought into the real world, we often do not have complete data or data with an excellent level of fidelity. I see that sometimes it is necessary to trust intuition - the “feeling” of an experienced manager can be valuable in deciding to "test and learn" instead of standing still.

I can’t harp on this enough. Trust your team and their perspective and listen to your incumbent stakeholders. It amazes me how many complex problems are solved by asking the right questions to the right people and listening with our blinders/project biases removed.

Consulting the teams is part of gathering data. Teams have different perspective than yours, you HAVE to listen from them before making a decision.

A more diverse team is a safer team was the key learning that I took from a year at TfL. But why? Different perspectives meant there were less unknown unknowns and blind spots. I now use this as a guiding light when project managing. This team is full of wisdom and its the project leaders job to extract it when needed to ensure the project is a success.
