Strategic decision-making is like developing your strategies. Be clear with your goal and strategies. Revisit them, if necessary. Gather and analyze data and identify options. Weigh the feasibility, pros and cons, and risks for each option and then choose the most advantageous option for you. Make decision, implement, and evaluate the process and result. Celebrate your success or learning.

In my coaching experience, the leaders who excel are those who treat data as their compass. By understanding market dynamics and customer behaviors, you turn guesswork into precision. A critical insight I've shared with my clients is to avoid assumptions—data-driven decisions are your secret weapon. While assessing the pros and cons is a common practice - I loathe it. I find it causes more confusion and doesn't take into consideration human behaviour, including motivation. Instead of making a pros and cons list, I suggest you make a wants list. With each option, you state the option as "I want to X" and fill out all the reasons why you would want to do it. This usually makes clear the underlying motivations so you can choose intentionally and feel confident in your decision knowing your own reasons why, instead of it just looking good on paper.

Assessing risks isn't about being pessimistic; it's about being prepared. In my leadership journey, I've found that identifying potential pitfalls early allows for more strategic and resilient decision-making. By developing contingency plans, you turn risks into opportunities for growth. Remember, it's not about avoiding risks but managing them effectively. Challenge: Conduct a risk assessment session with your team this week and identify at least three potential risks for your current projects.

Studies indicate that delving deep into statistical studies to mitigate or assess all the risks to make a sound decision is highly unlikely. Executives know that they can rely on past experience to guide them through navigating similar challenges, but what about when they are faced with a new challenge? The science indicates that they will most likely face more obstacles than they expect (it's why budgeting sometimes is significantly under-estimated when approaching construction projects). Even as risks remain, an executive's role is to ensure that communication is transparent, consistent and clear at all stages of the project.

Once you have gathered data, considered options, and assessed risks, it's time to decide. Trust your analysis and intuition to choose the best course of action. Communicate your decision clearly to your team and outline the steps needed for implementation. Taking decisive action demonstrates leadership and keeps your business moving forward. Remember, no decision is perfect, but a well-informed and timely decision is better than no decision at all.

In my experience, enhancing your decision-making process through strategic thinking involves more than just selecting the best option. After thorough analysis, the next critical step is planning the implementation meticulously. Start by mapping out a detailed execution plan that aligns with your goals and the data gathered. Many incredibly successful women I work with struggle to make decisions - and it is often a result of this old advice. That thorough analysis needs to be made because there is a 'right' decision and a 'wrong' one. Instead I recommend seeing things as a series of tiny decisions, each with an evaluation that is made AFTER the decision is implemented. This helps you move quickly, see what happens, and make the next choice, and the next, and so on. Speed creates more learning and provides you with more tangible data than hypothetical thinking about analysis usually can.

Set aside time to review the outcomes of your decisions and identify what worked well and what didn't. Gather feedback from your team and stakeholders to gain different perspectives. Reflecting on your decision-making process allows you to learn from your experiences and make better choices in the future. Continuous reflection fosters a culture of learning and growth, enhancing your overall decision-making capabilities.

In my experience, my clients who tend to be in very senior roles have mastered the art of reflecting regularly. What is not done well though is taking action on that reflection especially if there is a managing up component and it's negative news. For example, if a trial/pilot is not achieving the hoped-for results they opt to "try a bit longer" over taking action to stop. Or If a project is not going well, it's often hidden until it's too late and much money is wasted. For strategic thinking to realise its true potential the environment surrounding executives and management needs to be more nimble when it comes to change and the culture of blame needs to be swapped for one where mistakes are encouraged to learn fast and pivot.

What got you here, might not get you there. We can rely on our strengths to ensure that we do the best with what we can today, but it's equally important to know that we are always learning, which makes us agile, resilient and dynamic.

One of my strategies when I work with my clients is to "begin with the end in mind" and work backwards. It's my favourite Habit of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People written by Stephen Covey. Working backwards often highlights that the goal is worth pursuing but often the plans need to change to get there. This is where the sticking point is. Once a plan exists many don't like changing it.
