Here's how you can enhance your consulting career through active listening.

Here’s my take: While listening is very important for effective communication in consulting, the ability to comprehend is just as important. Comprehension involves understanding and making sense of the information heard, requiring higher-level cognitive functions such as interpreting, analyzing, integrating new information with existing knowledge from various sources & experiences, evaluating the relevance, drawing parallels, accuracy, and value of the information, drawing conclusions and making various suggestions with pros & cons based on it. In my personal opinion, without good listening skills, comprehension becomes difficult, and without comprehension, listening loses its purpose.

Understanding the client's needs and your capacity to carry it out is most significant. If this not done, it is like hunter shooting aimlessly. He/she will bring home nothing. Listening to the client and your staff attentively and asking appropriate questions will bring out areas of concern that need remedying. A collaborative attitude with both the client and staff is needed at all times.

Launched into a monologue on models, ignoring the client's reality. The team disengaged - wakeup call, I wasn't listening to their perspectives. Re-engaged by asking questions, observing cues, and showing empathy. Co-created resonant solution. Lesson: Active listening = partnering to deeply understand before solving. Everyone of us has some natural talent which influences our style. If you are for example engineer who loves solving technical challenges and feels happy working in teams of like minded people. It’s hard to transition to role where technology part is diminished and when you must spend more time talking than building things. Same is the opposite way when natural born sales guy ends up in technology team he will be frustrated by lack of communication because he is used to talk more than somewhere alone build something. These mismatches leads to conflicts its resolution is always about culture. Best culture tries to balance both worlds but it’s not uncommon one culture wins and you must find what fits your personality.

Consulting is not active listening. That is a job of a counsellor. A cosultant should be active in questioning. A consultant should be opening mind of a client by asking questions, generally termed as brainstorming. And drive client towards actionable solution and plan.

You also develop rapport by being authentic. Listening is one thing and understanding is another. We can have two scenarios - client says “I want you to do 123 for my company” and Consultant A replies “sure, we can do all that for you. We will send you the proposal right away” and then you have Consultant B replies “tell me why you need 123. Please explain your pain points and what makes you think that 123 would resolve it”. Client replies and it’s evident they don’t know what they need and it’s certainly not 123. Consultant B suggests “you only need 3 for now, 12 is unnecessary and a waste of time and money”. Rapport is not just listening, but developing trust and confidence.

Sometimes your experience is your worst enemy. You tend to club all issues in similar buckets. Once I almost made the mistake of assuming that I knew what the problem was before I was through listening to the entire team. But eventually a casual chat with the PA to the MD, just before the final presentation, made me realize that the matter was something else altogether. Thankfully I found an excuse, went back to the drawing board and recrafted the solution. Much to the MD's delight!

The art of communication is to ensure your words are instilled with trust and confidence so regardless of the conflicts that may surface, you voice alone can calm the distressed client and your ways can diffuse the issue so you can get back on track and immediately collaborate to resolve rather than getting preoccupied with finger pointing and the endless blaming games.

Client disagreement escalated, and team members took adversarial stances. Instead of arguing, I listened - asked questions to understand root issues, and acknowledged all viewpoints. This neutrality defused the tension. Co-created solution addressing core concerns. Active listening is powerful for conflict resolution. Early on, I would drive client meetings with pre-set agendas. Missed opportunities to learn emerging trends/needs. Started actively listening - asking probing?, noting feedback/cues. Exposed to novel ideas/perspectives. Pivoted offering to stay ahead of industry shifts, and meet evolving needs. Active listening enabled continuous learning, and staying relevant. Lesson: Keep your ears/mind open in every interaction. Active listening exposes you to the insights needed to proactively adapt your approach for consistent growth.

One of the best perks of a consulting career in communication is the opportunity to conduct consumer research. I have thoroughly enjoyed all kinds of research, but I especially love conducting depth interviews. I have learned so much from customers. Learnings that I have put into practice. Active listening, to me, beyond the usual understanding of being able to zone in on the vital few, key points in a conversation, is also the ability to read between the lines, or synthesize an insight out of disparate statements you hear. For example, a COO may tell you about RoI from recent tech investments being way below expectation, and the organization having gone through a restructure a year ago. Does it raise a flag in our mind about convergence .. that this could potentially be a change management scenario (since the investment is already made), and can we give her an option of accelerating value realization? Or if a product launch is delayed and the tone is stressed, could it be an opportunity for an alignment workshop? Etc.

Asking Questions Speaking from my consulting experience, I think using active listening to enhance your consulting career demands that you ask your client or client representative questions intermittently or after he/she finishes speaking about the consulting project. Questions to be asked should help you clarify what has been said and should be helpful in identifying clearly the task to be completed to the satisfaction of your client. Even a holy text says "the intentions of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out." You as the consultant should be the man of understanding being consulted to draw them out of the client or client representative by asking questions based on your active listening to him/her.
