It's funny to see how people communicate and understanding that is just as important as being engaged. I fully engage with eye contact and body language. Not only does it show interest to who is talking, it prepares me mentally to listen and not worry about what it was I was going to say. It isn't difficult to actively listen but we have to fight our natural tendency to want to get the next word in.

Explain the Why: Always provide the context for your updates or issues. Explain why certain actions are necessary and how they fit into the bigger picture.

This comes back to active listening and listen for what the person you are talking to is saying. We all fail at this a lot. My best conversations are purposefully listening. If I do more than 30% of the talking then it isn't nearly as good. Now if you are engaging with someone who prefers to listen, you might need to lead the conversation but draw them in with questions.

There are two sides to this. Scheduling time for an intentional discussion is important but also let them know ahead of time what you would like to discuss in the meeting. Sometimes the quick 2 minute hallway conversation is more effective. It isn't enough time for something detailed but to elicit just enough to know what they are thinking.

I would boil it down to 3 priorities : 1. Respect Their Schedule Avoid Interruptions: Do not interrupt during critical tasks or meetings. Schedule Meetings: Request a specific time slot for discussions to ensure full attention. 2. Prioritize Your Needs Urgent vs. Important: Distinguish between urgent and important matters. Quick Updates: Use brief emails or messages for less urgent issues. 3. Be Proactive and Prepared Plan Ahead: Anticipate when you need input and schedule time in advance. Come Prepared: Be ready with all necessary information and potential solutions during meetings.

Let me state the obvious before diving further into my point - that communication involves reciprocating 2 parties and your boss, who I assume means direct line manager, should be the first party who knows exactly what you’re doing and helping you prioritise your work. To make your professional relationship with your boss functional, regular catch-up involves feedback loop is a must-have. You will understand their expectations towards you and you can also make them understand your professional needs to maximise your performance.
