You cannot improve your energy use if you don't know how much you're using in the first place. This is why certifications like LEED requires energy and water metering as a prerequisite for any of their certifications. You may not be able to immediately improve your energy use, but you can figure out your baseline.

Sustainability, in its modern usage, is a concept intended to change your perspective and to consider impacts on the environment and social issues. Data can help pinpoint the biggest energy usage points to leverage and focus your efforts - those low hanging fruit, rather than efforts that have diminishing returns. Data can also help analyze if a solution is actually working, or if improvements need to be made.

Utilize advanced analytics tools to analyze large datasets related to resource usage, emissions, and environmental impact. For example, in agriculture, employ satellite imagery and machine learning algorithms to optimize irrigation schedules and crop management practices, reducing water waste and increasing yields. The circular economy represents a transformative approach to sustainability, emphasizing the reduction of waste and the continual use of resources. By prioritizing the reuse, refurbishment, and recycling of materials, the circular model minimizes the environmental impact not only of waste processing but also of raw material extraction and the associated emissions. This shift from a linear 'take-make-dispose' paradigm to a circular one has a multifaceted impact: it conserves natural resources, reduces pollution, and diminishes the carbon footprint linked to production and consumption. As a result, the circular economy not only addresses waste management concerns but also enhances sustainability

The circular economy is not 'recycling on steroids'. Like 'sustainability', it is a concept. It's intended to make you realize the waste and other negative impacts of the prevalent economic (business) model that relies on selling more and more 'stuff' (technical term) without much regard for the unintended (negative) consequences for the environment and society. It deals with material stocks and flows, including their management and maintaining value over time. It's about changing business systems to mimic nature's sustainable model, which is cyclical. It is important to see all these elements of sustainability in a holistic or connected way. In the case of renewable energy, it's a "good thing" to increase the availability of clean, renewable energy, but there is a potential to forget all the other sustainability questions. For example, if renewables are designed and deployed that helps the transition to a clean energy future, but if there is no consideration for what materials these technologies are made from, and what happens at the end of the use period of the technology, we can be inadvertently creating a future unsustainability problem unrelated to energy. Sustainable design does not happen in a vacuum. We need collaborative solutions and different perspectives that attack our global warming problem from as many angles as we can get. Technology can help connect within a design team to share ideas, improve transparency, and foster this crucial collaboration.

In real estate sector, PropTech is widely adopted to enhance sustainability in terms of promoting "Stakeholder Wellness". IoT sensors are installed to monitor Indoor Air Quality parameters which could trigger corresponding adjustments in fresh air intake of mechanical ventilation system. Similar IoT sensors are deployed for various purposes including thermal comfort control, water leakage alert, motion detection, etc. which help to promote the well-being of building occupants and conserve valuable resources.
