It is also important to then carry out a root cause analysis, so as to identify the underlying drivers of inefficiencies. This will inform effective resolution of the problem.

In order to identify issues and begin the troubleshooting process, you must first have an intimate knowledge of the process itself and how each piece of equipment works. Only then, will you be able to accurately and quickly deduce where the potential failure points and issues lie. Without such knowledge, you will be prone to much more guess work than logical elimination of things that are not the root cause of the issue.

There are many tools that can be used to analyze the potential root causes and validate or eliminate them systematically. These are tools like 5-Whys, fishbone, cause and effect diagrams and many more. On the surface, items can appear to be highly correlated to a potential root cause. Without process knowledge, one might waste valuable time and resources chasing down a potential root case that is correlated without causation. Having that intimate knowledge allows one to easily rule out a highly correlated, but not causal potential root cause.

Analyzing causes will be more effective if one is an expert of has a broad knowledge of issues that may be causing inefficiencies. The process also depends on effective logical evaluation or deduction. Familiarity with reliable tools successfully used by others helps when selecting tools appropriate for a particular application.
