In a nutshell the approach has to be based on 'Design Thinking'. Putting oneself into the shoes of the end user is critical, while technical know-how or related complexities can be worked out, the practical application and know-how to the utility of a particular application from the end user perspective will drive everyone in the team to make the right choices. This approach involves a lot of brain storming and bringing options that will work, while this is easier said than done, creativity will get built right from word go as the user's perspective will form the core of the process.

Embracing ideation to enhance design efficiency is depended on the process you are planning to achieve success. In my opinion this process is different for Engineering Change Management, New Product Development, and in Reverse Engineering. In most of the ECMs are related to product or process improvement through optimisation techniques behind the existing design. However, in case of NPD and Reverse engineering the process is a little different but I think Lateral Thinking Process and Brain Mapping techniques have a vital role. At present, in many of the Reverse Engineering projects, are encompassing the engineering behind the design.

Constraints are not obstacles, but rather springboards for invention. In our sector, we frequently encounter tight budgets, stringent rules, and material limits. Nonetheless, these problems encourage us to think beyond the box and devise innovative solutions. By embracing restrictions, we can improve design efficiency and effectiveness. This strategy not only addresses immediate issues, but also frequently leads to innovations that benefit our whole sector. Remember that some of the greatest technical wonders sprung from seemingly unattainable limits. Let's look at each issue as an opportunity to demonstrate our inventiveness and problem-solving abilities.

It may not be always feasible to iterate on multiple ideas. In these cases it is important to evaluate the ideas using various techniques like ranking matrix or AHP based on complexity.

Iterative type of design is the fundamental behind the continuous improvement of a product. In such a case we have to define the process of iterations which could be much benefited. For example rather than copying a shape and dimensional parameters of the design of a flywheel, it is better to calculate the energy stored in the original model. This engineering data will help you to provide a new design which would not violate any IPRs and thus the Reverse Engineering will be realised to a new model. The same scenario is highly important in case of NPD which welcome us to be a torch bearer. Once we are collecting the scope definition of a design project, primarily we should collect primary and secondary data, for design iterations.

This point is crucial. It's always much harder to iterate or work from a blank file than on a design, no matter how basic and schematic it is. Probably you will have to redo it from scratch to ensure that the design is "clean and well-structured," but having gone through that previous iteration, you will do it very quickly, meeting all the requirements and having a good structure.

KISS: keep it simple and smart is the first step in communication throughout my life. After thinking, I try to communicate in an order that the other party can understand, not in my own order of thinking. While doing this, it is always useful to remember the KISS principle.

Maintain Simplicity is a most common point of discussion every where about engineering design in different segments. However, it is not as simple as the term “ Simplicity”. You should take a proper path to achieve success which has to be started from brain mapping techniques and Lateral Thinking methods and procedures. In my experience, achieving simplicity is often the most time- and labour-intensive part of the design process. From a Pareto perspective, it's the 80% of your effort resulting in the (often critical) 20% value-adding improvements... :) Whilst this 80/20 investment can be very tedious and frustrating, it's also te most satisfying, rewarding, and long-lasting. :)

Peer review of design & test specifications is an important part of the engineering design process. As a designer, you do need to test your implementation thoroughly, but it's easy to have tunnel vision and not think about the problem holistically. A reviewer provides a fresh perspective e.g. how an operator would interact with your tunnel ventilation PLC design. Usually, the designer & reviewer roles are clearly defined in the Verification & Validation standards e.g. EN50128 for rail tunnels. The role of an internal/external system assurance team is critical in ensuring the V&V requirements are met correctly.

Working together is a difficult craft. Especially people who are used to working quantitatively may have a harder time collaborating. However, within the principle of unity is strength, it can be aimed to ensure that 1+1 is greater than 2 as a result of working together.

When directly considered, constraints are the dynamics that determine the improvement of the result in an optimization problem. These are generally related to resources. As the number of constraints increases, the solution of the problem becomes more energy and time consuming. If the related constraints can be combined and/or simplified, the solution of the problem will be faster and less energy consuming.

Each new design is more unique and effective as compared with the past design( in the slow era). For example,the calculation by slide rule,log book ammonia prints and later more effective computers,3D etc.
