Based on past experience, I watched EHS interns be treated like an additional field safety person. They were given no responsibilities and only learned a small part of the real job. I did my best to give them responsibilities such as helping foremen write Job Hazard Analyses and generating other documents. I encouraged them to keep them for potential use in projects or as examples of past work performance. This seemed to show them I was interested in their potential and helped me to stay in contact with them years later. Todays intern is tomorrow’s new hire, and the future boss. So it’s up to us to ensure they’re given the opportunity to learn what we know.

An internship is a great opportunity to gain real world experience but is often under appreciated. I viewed this phase of my career as an opportunity to learn and take on leadership responsibilities while having a mentor I could turn to when I felt like I was getting in over my head. As time went along I developed the necessary skills and, more importantly, self confidence. While I was anxious to move forward in my career and take on increased responsibilities (and earn more money), I’m glad I didn’t rush the process. Looking back, I see my internship experience as one of the investments I ever made in myself.

In my experience and opinion as a leader, every member of your team should have some sort of mentor guidance. They don’t have to be an intern. Maintaining transparency and open communication with your staff, no matter what level of the organization, not only makes you an effective leader but also cultivates the next generation of leaders. Teaching your staff about leadership decisions gives them a sense of ownership, value, and appreciation for the work that they do and the team they are on. If you are hiding leadership decisions from your team, and not involving them in the conversation, then you may be setting your organization up for failure. Take care of your team and they will take care of you.

An example i have seen in my internship days is when a wardboy made a mistake while serving food to the patient. The patient was furious about it, i tried to calm him down but he didn't listen Then the senior staff of my department intervened and smartly assured the patient to take the corrective measures and provided him immediate relief. So internships will give you the exposure of realtime hazards and how to solve them by a collective effort.

For days we have problems happening, which are not given due attention to the root cause, which will cause future losses. I had a previous employer that required the interns to spend time in different departments outside of their study. Two or three weeks in the risk management department helped them gain an understanding as to how that department functions and expectations are, giving them a greater potential for buy-in later in their career.
