Implementing security during the design phase is more cost-effective than post-deployment. Security should be integrated at every stage of the design process. This includes having Security Architects perform MITRE ATT&CK scenarios at project initiation, to developers incorporating unit tests, and adopting secure development methodologies. Establishing an environment where peer reviews are crucial before code deployment is also essential. Furthermore, integrating SAST,DAST, SCA tools into the CI/CD pipeline to understand your code, is vital. It’s important to regularly assess and review dependencies(open-source code and other third-party components). Enhancing security can also be achieved through regular penetration testing and code audits.

The way to be secure by design may involve you fixing a problem so deep no one has addressed it yet. At Nile we are focused on fixing some major headaches in networking, stopping lateral movement being one of the biggest. Threat actors target pathways and systems they can hide in. To solve this we had to redesign switching and wireless to isolate traffic down to a blast radius of one. Purpose built hardware designed securely from the ground up is the only way to fix many problems this being a great example. By going deeper down to layer 2 we remove the pathway forcing traffic to be inspected and untrusted.

There is a saying, "You can't outrun a bad diet". This is also true when it comes to solutions architecture. I have not encountered a systemic issue in the last 15 years that was not caused by bad architecture. Whether that is security, performance, etc. it all stems from the same cause.
