And let's not forget the most crucial skill: The ability to troubleshoot frozen screens and unmute team members with the patience of a saint and the speed of a superhero.

A junior manager said his line manager talks to him very effectively. Within 10 minutes of an audio conference through MS Team, they discuss an issue, a solution, and the way forward. On the other hand, with another team member, the same line manager spends the first 10 minutes in “Hi”, “Hello”, and social talks before getting to the point. Based on the team members' nature - introvert, extrovert, or ambivert - a line manager can tune their communication. Also called e-leadership, virtual leadership can be uncomfortable when building trust. To sum up, building trust requires three e-skills: e-EQ (as practiced virtually), empathy, and co-evolving continuously toward achieving the organizational goal.

Experience taught me that building relational equity will garner trust. Vulnerability, honesty and consistent communication are high-yield investments in relational equity. When you are clear and honest with your team, and share when you do not have to, they begin to respect you and trust the leader you are. Simply be honest and invest the time in building relationships. It will have incredible returns in trust.
